<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NYR1983</b></div><div>So would you prefer 5M in the hands or a lottery ticket for 10m? I would understand your reasoning if we were talking karlsson but a 22year old two way stud. I’m don’t understand the preference to gamble. KAM would only be 27-30 when the window hits and for most players that’s their best years.</div></div>
top goal for the GM is winning a cup.
My view; is I’m aligned with the following timelines.
Celebrini’s career, followed by WSmith, Musty, and Eklund.
- currently we have 1 true great D prospect that fits their timelines great (Shakir)
- we have a cupboard full of prospects that align well, and there’s variety (Scorer/ Specialist - Halttunen, 3C/M6 - Bystedt + Edstrom, high octane - Gushchin, etc)
- a lot of great long shot d prospects of variety (DFD-Furlong, Star OFD-Cagnoni, etc)
- what we don’t have…
A franchise d to lineup with this core. KAM is exactly what you said, a great player and safe play. But I’m not here to be a safe gm, my mindset. I have KAM replacements (not exact equals) nearly every couple years as UFAs. Do I want KAM if I’m building a cup team: for sure.
But what fits better with my goal and my timelines…?
If my scouts support it, the research supports it, if I can get a potential 7-11 million dollar D man from this specific draft=the same draft as Celebrini. Not only does it fit my goal and window better; it keeps my window open longer.
You can find a starter (goalie) on the market. You can find a top 4 / 2nd pair D. You can’t easily find a twin to match Macklin Celebrini’s window - franchise Center gets drafted with a franchise D. That’s a draft that not only saves careers, but builds legacies.
I’d be way more bummed if I traded away a superstar D for KAM, then if my pick ended up as a mid D from betting on my gut yknow.
Sometimes it works: like the Sens drafting Sanderson (which raised some eyebrows but got praise for being a bet they made to get their guy).
Sometimes it doesn’t: like the Sharks thinking they can turn Merkley into a star (he was compared to Dahlin in the draft class).
Expect this time I’ve really liked what Grier and his staff has done with their recent picks.
Halttunen, Smith, Lund, Havelids, Musty, Cagnoni, Bystedt, Edstrom, Shakir, Zetterlund. If I look at that group (all rounds 4 and up didn’t add other picks):
I’m super happy with
WSmith
Halttunen
Musty
Shakir
Zetterlund
Cagnoni
I’m happy with:
Lund
Havelids
Bystedt
Edstrom
So if they got their guys and a good trade up I’m all for it.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NYR1983</b></div><div>No one is giving away a franchise player if that’s how these kids are touted, but fun to dream I guess.</div></div>
It’s the life with prospects if you research the class.
Parekh is like a super high risk-high reward. He could be Ryan Merkley, he could be the next star OFD. There’s little in between, maybe that between could be TDA but that’s not great either way. He is a RD which adds a lot of value. Not my words “he’s the best Canadian OFD talent we’ve seen since Makar potentially” - per Dobber.
Dickinson (LD) is high floor, safe pick. Your expecting a physical, quality defensive defender: if he can improve his offence he could become that Slavin type defender. If he doesn’t he could likely be Pesce (easy examples).
Buium (LD) has a ton of hype because of his historic NCAA season but there’s a lot of doubters. He’s a tremendous skater and great puck mover - but he’s not big or super physical currently. He could just be thriving in college and simmer off in the NHL is what the doubters think. He’s a high ceiling guy, with not a massive risk, but his floor is super unclear - his size and lack of grit makes him a fall candidate.
Silayev (LD) is the opposite. 6’7, over 220 at 17 years old lmfao - he’s producing at a pretty outstanding rate for a draft eligible D - already in the KHL and with how young he is and how he’s producing there’s some scouts salivating. He’s super raw and could just not develop much more or just not be good enough to become more. Hes not elite puck mover or anything - he doesn’t see the game well is some of his criticism. But if he does grow more, and develop more - that’s that Hedman comparison. Some scouts say his floor basically Zadorov. That’s why some worry about drafting him inside the top 5 - not wanting to spend a top 5 pick on Zadorov.
Levshunov is someone who people expect to be able to go 2nd OA and dethrone Russian star Demidov. Lev is RD which adds a lot of value. Lev is another college star who seems like prototype top pairing D in the making. I’m not sure of any criticisms as I haven’t done much reading on him as I don’t expect him to be within the Sharks reach, as I can’t see him outside the top 5.
Which if the Sharks do trade up it’s 7-11 nothing earlier. All guys are gambles. But that’s what you do when you have the luxury of selecting 1st OA imo. You got your franchise Center.
Don’t rest - go try and get that franchise D. That’s my thought.

They are nhl ready but as you can see they aren’t good enough to propel the team into playoffs. Those guys will one day be there but it takes time. Makar was an exception but also was surrounded by an amazing D core as it was. I’m in no way trying to pawn KAM, he’s probably as untouchable as Laffy is. Cheap sure thing is always better than a gamble</div></div>
Sharks aren’t in the business of a cheap sure thing.
They need a franchise pillar and that’s the goal of trading up/selecting one of the top of the class D.
It’s like selecting Nemec, Jiricek, Power, Sanderson.
They’re all gambles at the end of the day but I’d rather take a shot on someone like them then pay for a player the Sharks don’t necessarily need and that’s been my point the whole time.
Silayev is the Russian Hedman if he lands
Dickinson is a bonafide shutdown number 2 / 1 if he lands (Slavin esque)
Parekh is Karlsson/Hughes/Dahlin potential on offence he lands
Buium is a overall stud, number 1-2 if he lands.
Somehow even some amateur scouts think Lev could fall past 5. Which makes the Sharks want to trade up even more.
It’s got nothing to the KAM - and nothing to do with him as a player. I’m not knocking KAM, im not even discussing him. Ive been pointing out the Sharks needs.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NYR1983</b></div><div>So I’m guessing your timeline is 6-8 years from now? Because that how long your typical top line D needs to mature to that competitive level. As for KAM, his 40 points was without PP time, on NYR pp1 he would be closer to 70-80 points. His 5v5 points per 60 is remarkable and if they didn’t have fox it would be KAM on pp1.</div></div>
The Sharks need minimum 3 years to develop and become competitive with their pool.
If you look at their D prospect pool it is a large gap in depth comparison. A lot of long shots and gambles (booms or busts).
And if you look at Jake Sanderson - it did NOT take him 6-8 years. Or Power.
This crop of D this year are on par with those guys if they land. With Parekh being Dahlin-Hughes level offensive talent.
I’d rather see what happens draft day then trade pre draft.

For a rebuilding team it’s aggressive and doesn’t perfectly fit the timeline.
With context :
If Dickinson, Parekh, Buium are within trade up (6-10) - they all for the timeline better with 2 of them having 60+ point potential (Parekh arguably could get 40 points off PP alone which matches Miller career high so far).
If two-three teams reach within the top 5-10 the Sharks can conceivably draft a top d at their pick or at 10-13 if they move ups.
It’s got nothing to do with Miller and all to do with the potential outcome of the draft order.
If this trade happens during the draft and the Sharks can get any of the top 5 D, and they don’t like Jiricek or Yakemchuk - sure I’d consider it more.

The whole argument of this vs that is so watered down.
He said she said - he started so I did it
It’s an argument that won’t ever end.
The league needs to make rules less subjective but that’s impossible. We all agree at the end of the day if your player gets cross checked in the face it’s not worth keeping in the game.
The league picked one play to penalize nothing we can do.

I respectfully don’t think I want to move 14 for KAndre (due to LD)-need to see how draft day plays out. Could be better utilized inna trade up.
I think too many fans are giving up way too early on Bordeleau. Way too early. Same for Gushchin.
Also don’t think Bystedt needs to be rushed so could be better to hold on to Sturm for depth and PK.

Nothing against Anderson.
Waste of cap space and ice time imo for SJS.
Also if he’s replacing Hoffman and Labanc; that means you’re replacing San Jose’s healthy scratches/bad contracts - with a new bad contract.
San Jose has no need for Anderson if we’re getting 3rds (whatever’s) and a struggling prospect. Offer would be need to be quality to take on 4m for many more years.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kohnsharkosz</b></div><div>A lot of ifs here. Getting someone to trade down from a top-10 is tough and I don't see Coe as enough of a sweetener vs another pick. That pains me to say as I was really high on him after watching his prospects game performance when he was transitioned out of juniors. His development has been sloooow. Plus, the way the #5-20 picks have been fluctuating it seems like a serious gamble on packaging picks when Buium may go higher than #8, and Jiricek who is a high ceiling 2-way RD will be available if the order lands like McKenzie has it. That leaves 33 and 42 for guys like Letorneau and Freij who could very easily pop as well. If there was more consistency in the rankings I would be all in on the move-up, but past the top 3, scouting has been super volatile this year.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Letsgosharks</b></div><div>Walking away with Buium would be amazing, No way Lev falls to 8 given all the hype for better or for worse.

I’m down for Jiricek at 14.
If we could do:
Jiricek, Emery, Hutson
That would be fantastic with our 3 picks.
Thing is…
Buium, Parekh, Dickinson, Silayev, Lev are enticing and the likely hood of each being a star is quite high.
Dickinson and Levshunov are expected to be guaranteed top4 d players in scouts eyes. Silayev about the same. Buium has number 1 potential, so does Lev. Parekh is a coin toss but a good one at that.
Freiji is getting Lots of hype to from amateur scouts.

However, if that were accepted by SEA then I certainly would love to move up to get Buium.

I just think someone like EJ Emery and Cole Hutson (my picks probably at 33 and 41) are going to be available and I’m a fan of both so maybe Seattle is too. I think trading up is actually really important here to select a quality Dman ,I have no problem going LD either, I would just get the best Defensemen available. Dmen tend to take a little longer to develop the pro game as well, so I think it is really important to get one in the prospect pool as quick as possible</div></div>
Yup, the D core needs their leader.
Shakir is amazing and Ferraro is gonna be here a while; but the rest are question marks or need more to time showcase what they truly are.
None of them are going to jumpstart this process tho like these new prospects. I’d rank my personal favourites as:
1A Parekh (RD) 1Aa? Buium (I can’t choose between them)
2A Dickinson 2B Lev (RD)
3 Silayev
For who I want. But it’s close as you can see. End of the day each one is completely different.
Buium is LD - incredible skater who’s amazing offensively but has continued to get better and better at defence. A safe bet, but a really good bet.
Parekh is RD - easily compared to Erik Karlsson offensively, comes with that defence/ off the puck issue. It’s an all in bet, you either win it big and reap the rewards or you bust.
Dickinson is LD - don’t know much/ don’t have a large opinion but heard he’s arguably the safest pick, and is large. He’s great at a lot, physical, and he’s very good in his own end.
Silayev is LD - heard the Hedman comparisons. Skeptical of that but hard to deny what he’s done/ doing and how he’s a giant.
Lev is RD - so much hype, is it maybe too much? Idk.
