he is a talented but not completely developed player, with at least a year to go before we know for sure if he can secure his potential as a 2nd pairing D (he has shown flashes) or if he stalls and ends up as a 6-7 D or bubble player. because he is young enough, cheap enough, and with time to grow, no need for habs to move him unless its an overpay

Why pay to dump Allen when you have 18 million is cap space ... give him away for free, keep the 2nd, trade Kovacevic somewhere for a pick if you must get rid of him. habs always have at least a half dozen players on the iR at any given time so hold onto players when cap space allows it.

Maybe trade that pick for Zegras straight up then and keep reinbacher?

NCAA players the Habs probably fail to sign
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>If Habs thought Tuch was NHL material, yeah the Habs were foolish not to sign him last summer, if Tuch was willing to sign.
That's the problem with college players especially, they have options. If you're going to draft them high, better be sure you can sign them.
I know nothing of Tuch...but he's from Syacurse. Sabres AHL team is in Rochester. Brother plays for Sabres. Looks like a Sabre signing.</div></div>
Tuch also underperformed last year in NCAA ... I don"t really follow but it seems he has stepped it up this year. His size and speed make him intriguing but if he truly wont sign, better to trade his rights for whatever return they can get

Fair point although I thought this would be a straight to LTIR scenario where Anderson does not even have to visit Montreal, let alone live there

Perhaps even buying a bit of karma by trying to find a place to play for a player they really won't use ... to show good faith efforts to future players and prospects to encourage them to sign. I would normally have assumed just clearing a contract with a plan to bring on another that fits better, but Buffalo has quite a few open spaces so not sure ...

It wont yield high returns, but they could also leverage cap space to help facilitate deals between contenders.

And why would the Habs pay anything with 14 million in unused cap space on this roster? Even in keeping Gallagher they could still add an 8 million dollar player and be under the cap ... in this scenario anyway ...

Campbell for Anderson
A one-for-one trade of an AHL goaltender for a top 6 forward (on this roster you have created at least) seems ... unrealistic. Anderson is overpaid, but, in Montreal"s current situation its fine, we have abundant cap space, at least Anderson is a healthy body for us.

The goalies in the AHL haven,t performed all that well, although Dobes is a young prospect that needs reps to develop and has already started playing a bit better of late ... but that team could use some stability and some veteran help.

Trade Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AntiAnalytics</b></div><div>Jake Allen is a HORRIBLE idea for goalie help for us
After a few decent games to start the season,
he’s back under a .900 save% for the season
In his last 5 games, he’s 0-4-1 with a save% of only .861
He’s reverted to the same crappy play he had last season,
when his save% was .891
He just isn’t good anymore
And hasn’t been so in 4 years now
Sorry to be so harsh,
but he really is just a horrible idea</div></div>
As a habs fan I would be delighted to accept this trade... but your analyses is pretty accurate. Allen seems like a good locker room guy and good team influence but in terms of actual play its slipped a lot ...

They have plenty of cap space available for next season. Habs might accept moving Allen for a 3rd and Nadeau, but Evans on his own should get at least a 3rd if not a 2nd

They picked him up for free its true, but he is valuable to the Habs for all the reasons the Leafs do ... he's a very big body on a good contract. He quietly goes about his business in his role. A late 3rd in 2026 might, at best, yield a serviceable NHL defenceman in time for the 2030-31 season. Habs pass.

Extensions
Its interesting but a risky proposition considering Knight's performance this year has regressed, possibly for how his development has been handled versus his actual talent. Habs already have Cayden Primeau who has a lesser pedigree but a similar development path of being misused a bit. So I think from the Habs perspective maybe take out the 1st but attach conditions to the 2nd whereby it could become a 1st if Knight plays a certain number of NHL games for example. If he stays floundering in the AHL as he is now, no first.

Josh Anderson is struggling a bit but Habs have abundant cap space so no need to shed his contract urgently; at least he can still play an NHL shift at least. High picks and prospects would need to be added.

No reason to pay to dump Anderson given the abundant cap space this team actually has ... Habs always have tons of injuries, keep him since there are no cap implications in doing so. Or buy him out. But don,t spend assets just to dump the contract.
