It shouldn't be an excuse because we still have a lot of firepower and got Drouin back last night. But I guess the Val thing happened right before the game, like he did morning skate, practices, and team meetings then was pulled either in the locker room or right before.

I think the shuffling of the D pairs was what really threw them off last night. Our Defense is the engine of the team and fuels the breakout and puck possession. Putting Walker on his offhand with a partner that he is unfamiliar with (Makar) and then having a 3rd pair of Jack Johnson-Caleb Jones was really disruptive. They played Girard-Manson alot to make up for it. I don't know that there was a better solution, just that it wasn't ideal.

MacKinnon was his "pre-Cup" frustrated self and wore his emotions on his sleeve; which probably gave Dallas encouragement that they had him rattled. Rantanen has been pretty lost all series for some reason. Lehkonen was a difference maker but his chances were inches away instead of going in and Drouin drove some good play but the Stars have done a great job pushing the Avs to the perimeter. With no Val Nichushkin to open it up the top lines struggled. Miles Wood did well at it but lacked the support to finish.

I seriously would put Wood on a top line in place of Val just to get that physical wrecking ball in to give the skill guys more room to work.

Worry about Marner/Tavares in 12 months. If one of those 2 approached and wanted out, would facilitate, otherwise, no.

With Utah’s existence; added buying pressure of available on ice talent as well as numerous teams looking for coaches, it is a bad offseason to voluntarily become a buyer of both. Everything is locked up, can focus on building a better team. Can deal with the headaches in a future friendlier environment. Maybe take a shot at a coach if there’s one guy that really moves the needle but if I didn’t get my guy I wouldn’t dump what I have for second best.</div></div>

Yeah the coaching decision is the front and center (another HC let go before extension?)

Player wise there really is just a few things that can do to improve the team vs "change for change's sake".

Pick 1 UFA: Max Domi or Tyler Bertuzzi
#1 RD in Free Agency
Goalie (1A or 1B) in Free Agency

Beyond that it is coaching/execution/systems and the role of the youth movement: Knies, Quillan, Minten, Cowan, Grebyonkin, Niemela, Hildeby getting any meaningful roles in 2024-25.

Predicting/expecting anything major beyond that requires 2 or 3 "steps" to come together that are impossible to determine today at this stage
