I’m confused, why would they do that? He’s still an effective top 6 winger… seems like bad cap management to me.

He said he was a "god" to Maple Leafs fans during the season exit interviews.

That's wrong.

Just poking fun at the silliness of majority of the Marner is the problem-trade him now for negative value from Leaf band wagon followers/haters.

He isn't wrong. Hockey players in Canada and pro athletes in general are worshipped. I mean look at the fan pages, puck bunnies and people who drop 300$ on authentic game jerseys. It is a bad comment to make but he isn't wrong

Ah, sounds weird. Not sure why he said that, but it could’ve been a joke… I still don’t see why you would punish your whole team just for something one guy said.

I think Marner made the mistake of listening to fan and media reaction and negative reporting (mainly focused on him) and made that comment out of frustration towards the fans/media.

Honestly in the season exit interview, he should have just said he was still playing injured and his ankle wasn't 100% healed, obviously it's an excuse but at least a few of the fans and media would cut him some slack considering at least he played with an injury and not missed half the playoffs with a tummy ache or headache like two other bums did.

It’s crazy how hard Dubas got bodied in all these contract negotiations for the core4. (Not that Brad is doing any better so far)

Well many Leaf fans are just claiming trade him for nothing and that his $11 million can be spent better, looking at this UFA group this summer, the quick answer would be no, you can't fix this team by throwing money at UFAs.

Even if they do make a trade, I'm sure the opposing team would force an unwanted cash dump player onto the Leafs to help make the money work.

In other words, no Marner next year will not mean $11 million more to spent, more like $5-$6 million to spend after resigning Domi as his replacement.

I know right! Contacts would be flying at him like **** on velcro! He would be constantly bugged… I could see a huge bidding war.

This time last summer, Nylander was quoting roughly $10 million would work, Tre countered with roughly $9, 3 months into the season he watched Nylander asking price go up and wasted at least $1 million more than he should have.

Absolutely! A lot of famous people let that stuff get to their head.. fans, media, fame etc. They will then say stuff they shouldn’t. I agree with you, it would be better to say that he was injured, but wanted to play. Say that you are gonna come out next year and give it 100% to win the cup. That’s all you can say. I haven’t watched, nor seen anything about this, but yeah it’s Toronto! A lot of fans are going to be passionate, and call you out if they don’t like what you are doing. That’s how it is playing in Canada in the NHL.

Honestly I think the Caps would be a perfect team for Marner (more likely as an UFA signing) but I can see Marner seeing the opportunity to be on the same ice and potentially get the assist to help Ovie break Gretzky goals scored record would be a Legendary moment for him to be a part of.

I think Marner likes the big cities teams, so Cali, Flo, NY, Dal, Sea, VGK, Nas, Det or Chi would interest him.

This is a prime example of why we can't have nice things in Toronto. Fans and media here can be the absolute worst. While his choice of words might not have been perfect, anyone with half a brain should see he was trying to say something positive about how much love players get here, not implying in any way that he's God lol. It's crazy that some fans are jumping all over him for this.

This team has had an embarrassment of riches in talent like we've never seen in Leafs history. It's beyond idiotic to want to tear it all down for stupidity. Other changes, like coaching adjustments and improving the defense and other minor changes, will more than suffice to get this team over the hump. Trading away superstar talent because of some dumb sound bite taken way out of context is beyond cray cray.

What gets me is the fans that believe if the Leafs can fully get rid of Marner's $11 million salary they can spend it all on 2 or 3 depth players.

Though let's be honest, if the Leafs trade Marner, the opposing team would have to cash dump a mid price star player and Nylander's $4 million raise will eat up the annual team salary cap hit raise we are finally getting. So in reality trading Marner would only gives the Leafs $5-$6 million to spend on upgrades in other areas while getting weaker on RW depth.

Anyhow fans hate the whole quantity over quality theory, yet that is exactly what these fans want>?

Well I'm sure if the Caps save $14 million in cap space for the summer of 2025 Marner may just sign with the highest bid rather than giving a hometown discount to a personal favorite team/city of his.
