Okay hear me out............... The Oilers could just buyout Campbell and NOT spend assets to trade him

but it is an idea to consider with what you explained with the savings

If Kings could fit Laughton under the salary crunch they would be foolish to not take that.

I could imagine a Campbell + pick for Petersen swap might exist here.
Oilers get Petersen and buy him out for a few years of cap savings, Flyers get Campbell and see if he can re-gain himself in a less media intense environment.
If situationally that works for Flyer fans it may be a path, but this trade doesn't come close to out valuing EDM just buying out Campbell.

Yeah, it's a calculated decision based on what you can do with the cap savings.

The Campbell buyout isn't too bad overall, but the Peterson buyout is better, but the Campbell buyout is only a real problem 2 of the 6 years. I'd love for Danny Briere to explore this.
2024-25 $1,100,000
2025-26 $2,300,000
2026-27 $2,600,000
2027-28 $1,500,000
2028-29 $1,500,000
2029-30 $1,500,000

I don't mind the Laughton trade value wise, but Kaliyev at this point is just a worse Tippett, he still has some potential, but I don't see why we'd need what might be another Tippett or worse

I thought about this, it really depends on what EDM can do with the space saved. If they truly need all available space to make their team vision work.

Keep Campbell:
2024-25: $3.85m (buried penalty)
2025-26: $3.85m (buried penalty) (buyout here would give $2.150m cap hit in 2025-26, and $2.45m cap hit in 2026-27, and then $1.35m for two more years.)
2026-27: $3.85m (buried penalty) (buyout here would give $2.4m cap git in 2026-27, and then $1.35m cap hit in 2027-28).

Campbell buyout Jul 1:
2024-25 $1,100,000
2025-26 $2,300,000
2026-27 $2,600,000
2027-28 $1,500,000
2028-29 $1,500,000
2029-30 $1,500,000

Peterson Trade and Buyout:
2024-25 $1,000,000
2025-26 $2,000,000

Definitely more favorable for the Peterson trade, but the cost to get there might not be worth it.

Remove Broberg and Petersen from the deal and Edmonton accepts. Otherwise not a chance.

It cost a first round pick to move 1 year of Patrick Marleau @ $6.25m - Why would $15m total to Campbell cost the same?

If the ask is higher Edmonton will just buy him out or leave him buried. As it is you're trying to get significantly more in return AND send back a worse goalie!

Yes, it's asking for more, because asking a team to take on $15m costs a lot, So is buying out that same player who is owed $15m over the next three season. The worse goalie comment is moot, because he will be bought out. Its simply trading for a lesser contract that is more favorable to buyout.

My biggest thought here was you already have a better Laughton in Phillip Danault, but Laughton can play the wing, too. Figured Laughton's contract probably equates pretty closely to what Kaliyev and Turcotte would get in their RFA deals.

Sure, and as others have said maybe that's something Edmonton entertains, but not at the cost of Broberg + 1st.

Besides, your $15M is totally false. Campbell is owed $13.5M, but since Petersen is owed $6M the savings for Edmonton are just $7.5M, not $15M.

A Campbell buyout costs $9M, a Petersen buyout costs $4M. That's a $5M difference, not $15M.

And the Campbell buyout money is spread over 6 years, Petersen's over just 2.

Fair point on the salaries - But I was using the cap hit number. Which is of higher importance to both Philly/Edmonton in this scenario.

As for the 6 years vs 2 years - That's pretty a simple answer to which is better for Edmonton - every penny will count when McDavid and Drai are taking up 30-35% of the Cap in 2026-27
