Getting deeper fixing goaltending

Created by: Zetsu
Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 15, 2024
Published: May 15, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
First, NOT a leafs fan. I'm not certain on values of players or if players in the farm system may be ready to play.

Second, I'm not an expert on the FA market so contracts may be bad representations.

Third, This is more to illustrate the value in trading Marner and Tavares to create a team that's deeper with better goaltending. The exact players aren't important.

Minnesota can't take on Tavares' contract with just 4.45M going out.

I'm not even sure Tavares would waive to play there if I'm being honest. I think with Tavares the leafs should basically hope for a top 6 Dman, a bottom 6 forward, and either a prospect or pick to create cap space, If that is Minnestoa because they trade away some of the vets, great. But it could be anywhere. I wasn't exactly making sure the other team's cap made sense since they'd have their own off-season moves.

I think maybe the only place he would waive to is Buffalo, unless he and his wife decide that they want to raise their family elsewhere. Maybe CLB since all the family guys seem to like it, but maybe they wouldn't have any family or friends there so could be hard. Although, I think Rick Nash still lives in CLB (yeah, he's their director of player development), I'm sure he and Tavares have some ties. Who knows? Maybe that's why Nash invited him over at the IIHF Worlds lol.

As for what the Leafs could get for him, they could probably get a 2nd pair D or a middle 6 forward that is younger or a 1st RD pick+ or a 2nd+prospect. It all depends on how much cap they are willing to eat. If they get him down to 7M, he'll be worth it more or less.

Sharks definitely decline. I know a 7th is negligible, but you're going to be paying assets to get rid of him, not getting assets.

You have to retain a few million of Tavares's contract. The Wild can't afford to do this without it. I also doubt Tavares waives for Minnesota. This is a pretty good offer, though.

The absurdity to think anyone is taking on that Reaves contract without the Leafs adding.
