A Future Team for Some Optimism Now

Created by: CaseyFlyman
Team: 2024-25 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 17, 2023
Published: Nov. 17, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Lines bases on highest xGF% according to Moneypuck, since it's been a blender this year. Shaking up the defense, which hasn't been good enough. Let Mateychuk and Svozi start in the NHL, both appear close to NHL-ready already. The right side is locked in with the Severson and Gudbranson contracts, plus Jiricek.

It's hard to imagine what could change on the forward group, with so many young pieces or core pieces locked up. Unless they move someone like Laine, or trade someone like Johnson for part of an upgrade...I think we just have to hope for improvement under a new FO and coach.

If Jarmo, JD, and Vincent are all fired/replaced for 2024-25, and the team continues to stagnate, I think we start looking at moving Laine and Jenner in hockey trades to get a high-quality piece or two to try with the young core.

If that's all they can pull for Provorov... yikes.

I figured, but he's also not a great play driver, makes a pretty decent chunk of change, and hasn't had a great stretch of games. If he regresses back to his 30-point, minus-20ish self, a good prospect and mid-round pick might be worth moving on.

Besides, I also just don't really care for the guy.

And they paid a first and a second to get him. New GM next season or not, sunk cost fallacy or not, if all they can get for him a year later is a fourth and an AHL RW, might as well just keep him.
