Refer to EK65 trade. Matthews could get a very good return but if Byfield was off the table for 5 years of Eichel he's certainly not on it for 1 year of Matthews

I'd love for the Devils to do this if Leafs offered.
I've always been a massive fan of Robertson's game.

I was gonna say, an extension better be on the table. I doubt he pulls a Gudreau, but you never know.

Extension doesn't change his UFA value. Never has

IMO Matthews will be a King, but the Kings aren't trading THAT much to get him. Besides the cap doesn't work at the beginning of the season.
Now if the Leafs are in selling mode at TDL, and Matthews cap hit isn't that high, yes the Leafs might get a good return for him, but not nearly as much as suggested here.

I know Leaf fans are disappointed in the Panthers series. But again it's Matthews who has MIA, or Missing In Production.

Huge overpay for rental Matthews...

If we want him, we could just sign him in free agency and not give up any assets.

Or LA waits until Matthews is a UFA and signs him while keeping the assets. Oops. McSorley already said it.

There has never been a single case in NHL history where a pending UFA was signed before being traded. The team acquiring is the team negotiating a new contract. the selling team holds zero cards in that department

True.
A bunch of guys have seen their UFA rights traded.
And a few guys still in their RFA years have been traded immediately after signing (ie, Devin Setoguchi).
But sign and trade UFA....never in NHL.

No one on the level of Matthews has been traded like this except Gretzky . Eichel got moved like that because he had a serious injury and he wanted out .

How many would be left if you narrow it down to traded in their prime and traded after having really good seasons

Those were all literally taken from an article titled "15 best NHL stars moved in their prime." Only one I added myself was Hossa for Heatley

Stevens was kind of traded. He was "offer sheet compensation" for Brenden Shanahan because the Blues didn't have the resources to properly OS him

He was awarded by a judge. He didn’t want to leave STL and STL didn’t want to move him.

I would need a 23 pick personally and probably a 2nd. Like robertsons speed and game but too injury prone

I don’t think he plays very fast. High motor, sure. But not a burner. And for what he does near the net, Graeme Clarke could provide.
