Switch Siegenthaler to Bahl

What is Bahl's over all value? Are we ready to give up on him?

You shouldn't be ready to give up on him, but it would take the better player to get Marty. He is a fan favorite and a very good defenseman.

I think he has some value as defensive 3LD with size. But until he improves the puck skills, he doesn’t help a team that thrives on transition. His pass completion rate out of d-zone was among the worst in league. Lot of pucks in the skates if our forwards in neutral zone.

I think his defense in d-zone has been good. He can disrupt down low as well as anyone on our team. His transition defense is spotty…and my worry when people call for him to be a big open-ice hitter, it would get worse. We see Trouba play that way…and while it may land a big one every now and then, also whiffs a bunch, and people skate right by him.

I would like to keep Bahl as 7D and add another LD who better fits the style of play we have been using. Maybe for 1-2 years.

Siegenthaler had a slightly down season last year, with injuries and all. But overall, he is the better option long-term. Siegs is a lot better in his puck movement out of d-zone. And his transition defense is his bread and butter…he remains one of the league’s best. His d-zone disruption may be slightly behind Bahl, but not far.

I would do this as NJD, but would be sad to see Siegs go. If he isn’t a deal breaker I’d love to replace him with something else.

It's not he's injury prone. It's that he's not a 1 A defenseman. He's not like a force where he be a brute when needed. He's just there. like a couch.

He’s there providing fantastic defense in every year except this 1 down year. Hits≠defense

He isn't gritty enough. Which is what this ENTIRE team is missing.

caps moved siegs to make room for fehervary. they made the right decision and marty is a better player. don't think the caps would have interest in going backwards.

Caps move Siegs since he had been healthy scratch and had asked for a trade.

Siegs was a pending RFA and asked for a trade...Caps moved him.

Since the trade, Siegs has been the better defender.

don't recall him ever asking for a trade. doubt he did. he was a pretty bad player on the caps and he still is. totally immobile. Marty is the better player. Don't want siegs back. not a good player.

This couldn't be further from the truth. Shockingly uninformed statement. It's like you haven't watched him play a single minute over the last three years.
Since joining the Devils he's been one of the most valuable defensive players league-wide.

Siegenthaler asked for a trade…he talks about it openly.

He was #1 in defensive WAR in 2021-22…among top 10% last year.

And hardly immobile. His skating is an asset. He is one of the best transition defenders in league.

if you think his skating is his asset, then well, we're not watching the same sport. you can say his reach, his physicality, or his but for the love of all things holy, do not tell me that his skating is his asset.

His metrics from last year were also pretty abysmal. **cough cough** -8 GSVA. With a whopping market value of......800k (or league minimum aka replacement level). Defensive GSVA of -2. Uh oh. That's poo poo sauce.

but, let's not just use GSVA.

Let's look at his 5v5 shot metrics and his PK metrics:

- 5v5 offense with Siegs on the ice ->+9%
- 5v5 offense without Siegs on the ice ->+7%
- Ok so a net positive with him on the ice. Kudos

- 5v5 defense with Siegs -> +1%
- 5v5 defense without Siegs -> -2%
- Ok so a net negative with him on the ice

- +7% in Shots Against on the PK with Siegs
- -12% in Shots Against on the PK without Siegs
- Ok so pretty abysmal on the PK

Does not pass the eye test from watching him play. and sure as heck don't pass the analytics test.

his past couple years, might have been a decent player. but that's because he's tied to the juggernaut of hamilton

Ah, yes, cherry pick the injury-riddled down year.

Now do 2021-22 and 2022-23

for 22-23, he was glued to hamilton all year. who on his own has shown he's a juggeernaut.

now for 21-22, he was elite with Severson, Hamilton, and Subban. I was wrong. you were right. i'll admit that.

I'll even admit, looking at some of the metrics, he does look like he's been a pretty elite defender with the correct pairing in new jersey. but why would the caps want a guy who is coming of an injury that has so obviously hampered his ability to be even a half-decent player. and also keep in mind we watched this guy be a traffic cone for years. he got danced around so much it was like watching him merengue. 1 on 1, guy just would sh1t himself with flatter feet than your mother's chest. that's why she couldn't breastfeed you. which is why you prob have the opinion you do of Siegs. without the teet of your mother. but as far as who is more valuable right now...i'd rather have the younger, more well-rounded, tougher, better skater in Fehervary. Don't try to regift us the garbage we tried to throw out.
