Well said. My ideology with Adin Hill trade is if u look at the cap situation in Vegas it’s very very tight given all the extension money handed out, Hill is going into final year and $4.9 off the books could surely help them shore up the D core and add depth forwards. JT seems like he wants to be here, and only here, kinda like the Stamkos situation in Tampa. That’s his team now for rest of career. So keeping him on at a $5-$6 million cap hit I wouldn’t hate, cap will be roughly $92-$96 million in 2025-26 if it keeps going up the way it is, so having him as a 2 or 3 centre wouldn’t be horrible. With Matt Roy I may very well be off and I can agree to that, I was just thinking he can be a giveaway machine sometimes, has had 2 healthy years now but before that was a bit injury prone, but RHD are a premium and they tend to get more than we all think. I personally would resign Domi also, the issue, u need to prioritize the D-Core then depth scoring before he comes into play, our D over achieved in the playoffs and just struggling moving the puck and we also just couldn’t score so gotta fill the team before giving out $4M+ to domi, I rather 2 $2M guys who put up 30-40 points each over 1 Domi who’s gonna put up 30-40 points.
I think Vegas would just stick with Hill and Thompson and see who they will commit to, maybe they ditch both and go for Saros or Ullmark in the following off-season. Right now they are paying under 6M for their goaltending duo which isn't usually possible for quality goaltending. I think they already got Stephenson/Marchessault's replacement in Hertl, so they are likely to be gone, unless they opt to move Karlsson to save the older Marchessault. They also added Hanifin, which might mean they try to move Pietrangelo or Theodore unless they want to be paying 3 guys on the backend 7.3M+.
If he's still an effective C, then keeping him would make sense. I do think though there is merit in passing on the torch to the younger guys in terms of leadership, and I'm not sure that they would strip him of the captaincy and keep him around. Who knows though, it's happened to Patrick Marleau and he stayed around for a while in SJ.
Definitely do need to prioritize defense, but will likely be a process. If Roy continues to be a giveaway machine, he will have to prepare himself to receive the whipping boy torch from Klingberg as he did from Holl, funny that they are all #3. Speaking of Klingberg, I think Treliving recognizes that this team needs a different PP QB one with a shot, not sure if Montour fills the bill but would be nice to see the Leafs have an effective PP in the post-season for once.
Leafs PP % Regular Season vs Post-Season:
2023-24: 24.0 ----- 4.8
2022-23: 26.0 ----- 25.0 (RD 1: 28.6 RD 2: 18.1)
2021-22: 27.3 ----- 14.3
2020-21: 20.0 ----- 13.0
2019-20: 23.1 ----- 15.4
If Domi wants more than 4M need to let him walk and if he wants 4M, they should only sign him for 3-years max. If he would do 3-3.25Mx7 or 3.5Mx4/5, I'm sure that will end up undesirable but wouldn't be opposed to it.
