So you want Dach, our best RHD prospect who was just 5th OA, 2 first round picks, both likely to be top 5 for 1 year of control over Pettersson? Yea, no. Especially with the pretty decent chance that Pettersson will want out and tank his trade value in less then a year.

I would wait to see if Pettersson tries to force himself out with how bad their future is, Tkachuk 2.0 you could say.

No that’s ridiculous. You either get Dach or you get Reinbacher. Their choice.

I agree with you for the most part, but the pick I included (2025) would be top 5 protected but it’s not likely to be in the top 5 anyway.

If you want a 24 year old top 5-7C in the whole league, you’ll have to give up 2 of Reinbacher/Slaf/Dach/Caufield

I originally read it as three 2nds, so I was thinking Dach + Reinbacher + 2024 1st (since it’ll be after the season if it’s too high it can be changed with a 2025) with one or two smaller pieces maybe added on

And players asking for a trade doesn’t seem to overly rank their value, considering Tkachuk asked for a trade and returned a top line winger coming off a 115 point season, a top pair dman, and a 1st round pick. So asking for a middle 6C, a great prospect, and a 1st isn’t that egregious

Wait....I thought there would be an extension in place... that is the only way this makes sense....EP40 is in the wrong age bracket to help MTL right now for a1 year deal, but might be a great building block on an 8yr extension. 8yr/11M per?

No you definitely don’t. Are you suggesting giving the 1st round picks on top of that?

Dach isn’t a middle 6 C. He’s a 21 year old former 3rd overall pick who already plays like a bonafide top 6 C and is only going to get better.

I think he meant 2 of those four and one 1st rounder but I may be wrong....

As for Dach, he is an interesting piece because today he is a middle 6C on most teams, but he is only 21 as you mentioned, and he could be the next Tage Thompson, which is a bona-fide 1C ceiling... so depending on your particular thoughts (today v. ceiling) his value can be quite different. Which makes the idea of trading him or for him very intriguing. Just my $0.02

Dach isn’t a bonafide top 6C yet. His career high in points is 38. He has the potential to get there, but he isn’t one yet

A 1st more than likely wouldn’t be included if Caufield is, but if it’s two of Dach/Slaf/Reinbacher then absolutely a 1st is also included

Show me another trade in the last 20 years where anyone gave up that much? It’s never happened. You guys are crazy. You get one of those pieces along with a 1st or two.

Plays like a bonafide top 6 C is what I said. He didn’t play a full season. He’ll prove that to you this year. Underlying stats even back it up. Was also a top 10 defensive centre in the league last season playing against top competition.

In exchange for Jack Eichel...2 former first round picks, a 1st and a 2nd...and depending on your perspective there is a debate who is better today: Eichel v. EP40.

Pretty sure that wasn't 20 years ago

You obviously don’t know who Pettersson is. It’s gonna take an elite package of assets to get him. Reinbacher + Dach + a 1st isn’t an unrealistic ask

Which, to me, is to say, Montreal should keep those assets. Going away from on-paper value, Montreal is at a point where they have a couple of guys they already have locked in long term in Suzuki and Caufield, and then, really, a mish-mash of young, talented players, and then some talented prospects still on the way. That organization still needs time to transition away from the Bergeron sort of era into the new one. It will take a few years for their young guys to develop, mature, grow together and grow that on-ice chemistry that only happens with a lot of game time, and ultimately to see where guys fit into the lineup.

I don't think it is the right time to be adding Pettersson into that mix. He already appears to want to see how the season goes in Vancouver before committing long-term there. That could either be because he wants to win sooner than later, or he could simply not have much faith in the team's direction. If it is the latter, he might just see Montreal as a GREAT landing spot, as he himself could grow with that young group and hope to achieve greatness. If it is the former, then Montreal is definitely not the place for him.

Montreal should keep and develop their assets. It's a long road ahead, they should keep their prospect depth intact.

laughable to think this is even close to "fair" for EP40.

You have to start with Dach, Reinbacher, and 2 firsts easy. Then probably still have to add more. He's a top 10 player in the NHL

Alex Tuch was a 3rd line winger when that trade went down. Nobody viewed him as anything more.

It is an unrealistic ask. You don’t get two of those pieces and what is very likely a top 10 pick on top of it. You get one of those pieces (like every other high profile trade) and then a lesser piece and some high picks. Look at past trades for stars and use that as a guide

It’s absolutely the right time. We would have Pettersson, Suzuki, Caufield, Slafkovsky, Roy and then Hutson, Reinbacher, Guhle Mailloux on defense, with the deepest prospect pool in the league and those guys aren’t recent draftees, they’re just about ready to make the team The turn around would be swift. Would be a contender within 2 seasons.

Now quote the two players in those deals that were recent top 5 picks or on the level of Caufield.. Hell I’d take any combination of Caufield, Dach, Reinbacher over Weegar and Huberdeau at 30 with his contract that runs till he’s almost 40.
