Zegras is playing terrible, so if the premise is buying, Novak and Carrier make the team better. No they won't realistically buy, but if they did, the value isn't that far off for the way Novak is playing now and the way Zegras is playing now...

and the klingberg deal is because why would we not use our extra cap space to get picks? what purpose is there to letting 10M of cap space go to waste? might as well add picks and bury him

leaves them with $2 of cap space using LTIR for Brown but not Vasy
might as well give Watson every dollar you can since the ACSL is set relative to the payroll after he signs

absolutely, i see him as a top 13 fwd in their organization... but if the team doesnt plan on exposing him to waivers, then there would be no harm in giving him a 1way deal, and clearly they felt opposed to that, which reveals that dorion is more open to waiving him

crazy how both those guys got as much or more money in free agency, almost as if they're not bad players, and it was just the leafs' cap crunch... canucks fans had no business taking cap dumps anyway after they gave up a 2nd just to dump Dickinson

Toronto Maple Leafs signed Auston Matthews (4 Years / $13,250,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>So is MacKinnon selfish? They signed for essentially the same cap percentage (if 87.5 as expected Matthews is lower). You can say 4 years vs 8 and you'll be right, but flipside is Leafs locked in his core years without committing beyond them. 🤷</div></div>
i mean yes, mac was also selfish, in the sense that he could've taken a lot less to help the team. mackinnons raise pushed out plenty of other depth talent. like matthews, he's worth it, but the other difference is mackinnon got a cup already while playing for waaaay below market value, matthews hasn't been below market value since his ELC... its easier to accept mackinnon chasing money after getting a cup than matthews doing it before getting a cup, and i realize that is subjective

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>I thought Kerfoot was supposed to be a cap dump</div></div>
haha crazy how he wound up being worth exactly the same cap hit by the end of the deal... although with that said, his value was higher when he played LW with better linemates than when they asked him to drive a line as 3C... but clearly he wasn't always used in the most productive roles, and that's not his fault... nobody wouldve ever tried to dump him if leafs weren't in perpetual cap hell for the last 4 years

yeah i think they admitted the marleau deal was a mistake in trading the pick that became Jarvis just to dump him... thornton was cheap in TOR... youre right to point out too SJ has an equally atrocious if not worse history of contracts too
i love the 4 year term because you wont be stuck with him when he's declining, but none of these guys are willing to shave 1-2 mil off the top of their deals to improve the depth, and it all looks ok on paper, but man another 1-2mil in depth players would go a long way in the playoffs

once again leafs players show they are selfish. is he worth this much, sure, especially when it will expire before he ages out of his prime.
but the culture there is so self-centered with all these big contracts, no wonder they cant manage to keep guys like bunting and kerfoot, no room for any depth

well this is certainly better than another top-2 pick by NYR, based on point production per dollar of cap hit (based on the season prior to signing)

feels a little to me like one of the LHD may play RD... surplus of guys on the left in Vlasic, Tinordi, Kaiser, Roos, Phillips, and while minutes in Rockford are not a bad thing, some cycling up and down for NHL games can help too... Might be a rotation that changes every week all year even
