I've put a lot of thought into this pick since Chicago traded up. My main thought was Connelly, but since he's off the board, here's available players who Chicago could take (in order of who I think would be a better pick for the Hawks).
1. EJ Emery is a perfect fit for Chicago. A defensive stalwart and right shot who could be a great D-partner for Korchinski or Vlasic.
2. Michael Hage plays right in the Hawks' backyard and has had a fantastic season despite adversity. An agile, high-ceiling centerman who could be a great 2C under Bedard.
3. Charlie Elick is certainly a reach but he fits so well with what Chicago needs. He's another defensive right-shot D with a little more offensive flair and physicality than Emery, but Emery is still better defensively.
4. Igor Chernyshov could fit in Chicago as Davidson has made it clear that he's not afraid of the Russian factor. Out of all available players, he's the highest in my rankings at #16.
5. Liam Greentree is an okay fit for Chicago and he's probably the best player available after Chernyshov.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pinslack</b></div><div>I think MTL could bring Toffoli to start a winning culture. (edit : in fact, he's the player I would look for when the market open)
You dont just go from tanking to contending in 1 offseason, it's normal to have a transition and being a middle of the pack team for at least a season (could be this year and next)
WPG would prefer to keep Monahan, and Toffoli would gadly comeback to MTL if he had the choice (and the locker room will welcome him).
I would not bring both to avoid creating a logjam + keeper cap flexibility</div></div>
Evolving Hockey's contract projections were included in an Athletic article today:
- Monahan 3 × $5.258M
- Toffoli 3 x $6.113M
In order to beat the market some realistic offers going off those projections could be:
- Monahan 4 x $5.25M
- Toffoli 3 × $6.25M
Personally I would also like to add Monahan, he would be a pretty valuable 3C for MTL as they transition towards being contenders. Looking at the current state of MTL's center depth:
Suzuki 1C
Dach 2C - Can he stay healthy?
Newhook - Ideally a winger, could fill in at C.
Dvorak 4C - Not healthy, or consistent.
Evans 4C
Gignac DepthC
Beck DepthC - Projects to be a bottom 6 C.
Adding Monahan solidifies that 3C spot. They have no one equipped to fill that role right now, nor will anyone be ready to fill that role for at least 2 seasons (Beck is best shot and I could see him having a year or 2 in the AHL).
Not to mention, you can always trade Monahan (or Toffoli) if the time comes and it makes sense. I would give them some trade protection but not full.

Not really, I think I'd rather be more like the Rangers if we are picking examples.
On the other side of things, you could end up like Ottawa, Buffalo, etc... years of rebuilding and disappointment. You've gotta be careful.

Not a MTL fan but that blue line looks extremely suspect without him. I'd keep Matheson unless they can get Tanev or smth

You guys got a first for taking the last two years of Sean Monahan off of Calgary's hands. I'd think three years of Anderson would cost a 1st plus. Anderson a 1st, a 2nd and maybe a prospect or later pick for future considerations seems more realistic.</div></div>
It's a lot of blind optimism on my part. I would never ever trade for Anderson but some GMs surprise me. All Anderson needs is a strong first half of the season for GMs to forget how bad he actually is.

Nice post!
The Trades are a bit too complicated for my liking. Too many pieces moving each way in each deal. I don't think trades actually happen that way unless they are blockbusters.

We need a mock game like the AGM game, with 32 people picking for their teams, trades and all that jazz. Problem is, I don't know how we put that together. But if someone does, I'd happily take the Blues.

"I’ll be very surprised if Martin Necas plays for Carolina in the next season. As his dad said, Martin wants to play in 1st line & 1st PP unit. His dad even said in an interview for DenikSport:"Martin wants to be traded.” "</div></div>
He's definitely not going to make the first line on the Canes, but he 100% should have been on PP1. He's their best one-timer threat, and their entire PP2 zone entry strategy was "give it to Necas and hope he can get in himself", which worked more often than not. Also one of the best players in the league 3v3, him and Caufield (if it's MTL) would be scary during regular season OT.
He's got so much talent and I wouldn't be surprised if he broke 100 points on a team that can tolerate his mistakes and passes to nobody, but he's obviously frustrated with the Brind'Amour system that doesn't leave too much room for freewheeling skill. Even the stars on the team, Aho, Svech, Jarvis, are all kinda forced into being defensive-minded, which works great but isn't for everyone.
I'll miss him if he gets traded.

I'm not so sure, he went on a cup run with MTL and this was the players tribune OP referenced (for context this was before the cup run even happened).
https://www.theplayerstribune.com/posts/tyler-toffoli-montreal-canadiens-hockey-nhl
Apparently his wife really loved Montreal and I know he is still close with Suzuki, Caufield, and Evans. MTL has the cap space to accommodate Toffoli and Monahan returns - the pair played together in junior too and might be convinced to come back to MTL together as well. I definitely wouldn't count MTL out is all I'm saying.

If he takes a shorter deal, the money has to be higher. If it's in the 5-6M range it has to be longer. Look at Alex Killorn last year. I can't imagine him signing a different deal than that one.</div></div>
Killorn is a fair comparison if you're Toffoli's agent, but I also think Killorn took the best offer he could get on the market and went with it. If that's what Toffoli wants too he could probably get it, but if he chooses MTL (or LA) as other pointed out he might take a more reasonable deal.
I think $5.5M × 4 years could get it done for both sides potentially. Any more and MTL might want to reconsider the impact it could have on their window in future seasons.

I would honestly rather keep and extend Ehlers. My perfect trade would be for an established top 4 RHD even if it meant adding to the trade, but that isn't easy to find. Barron might have the potential to get there, but if we have to wait for him to develop, i'd rather just wait for Salomonsson and keep Ehlers.

very cool series.
the entire coaching staff should be overhauled this summer. special teams down the stretch and in the playoffs were atrocious. you cannot tell me that 1/21 on the powerplay during a seven game series is acceptable for a team with matthews and nylander as shooters. there's a lot of "what ifs" from this year but those all go away if toronto can eek out like 2 or 3 goals on a man advantage and prevent 2 or 3 when they're down.
woll is the starter next year but they will need a veteran backup. bit worried he might be injury prone. not sure if samsonov is back.
bring back domi as well. maybe lyubushkin too if he accepts between 1-2 million.
marner was not good, again. it should be a topic of discussion to trade him. matthews and nylander were both less than 100% this entire series and he couldn't step up.

IMO KH will still try to trade Harris or Barron (draft) and Savard (TDL), Reinbacher and Mailloux being called up. Nothing wrong with letting youth develop in Laval another year.</div></div>
I don't think Laval will roll 6 guys in the AHL that are all under the age of 22. (5/6 being 20 or younger).
