2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #6: The Quest for Lord Stanley's Cup

"I’ll be very surprised if Martin Necas plays for Carolina in the next season. As his dad said, Martin wants to play in 1st line & 1st PP unit. His dad even said in an interview for DenikSport:"Martin wants to be traded.” "</div></div>
He's definitely not going to make the first line on the Canes, but he 100% should have been on PP1. He's their best one-timer threat, and their entire PP2 zone entry strategy was "give it to Necas and hope he can get in himself", which worked more often than not. Also one of the best players in the league 3v3, him and Caufield (if it's MTL) would be scary during regular season OT.
He's got so much talent and I wouldn't be surprised if he broke 100 points on a team that can tolerate his mistakes and passes to nobody, but he's obviously frustrated with the Brind'Amour system that doesn't leave too much room for freewheeling skill. Even the stars on the team, Aho, Svech, Jarvis, are all kinda forced into being defensive-minded, which works great but isn't for everyone.
I'll miss him if he gets traded.

There's a long OT loss, a short OT loss, a 4-3 regulation loss, outshooting the opponents in every game in both attempts and SOG, and the opposing goaltender having a save percentage above 0.935, it's uncanny.
I legitimately might gamble on the last game being a shutout win for the Rangers.
Some huge questions coming up this offseason, this was the all-in year.

Like I said earlier, the Isles stopped playing once it hit 3-0, they were just trying to chip the puck to center and park the bus in front of the net.
Hurricanes looked like they were on a powerplay for the entire 3rd period

Isles are also blocking a ton of shots and the Canes can't hit the net, shot attempts are extremely lopsided in favour of the Hurricanes.
Isles defensive strategy seems to be to just chip the puck to center, let the Canes have it, and keep everyone out of the middle.

If only Carolina had overtaken the Rangers or Washington had overtaken the Islanders, we would have had
Canes vs Caps
Rangers vs Islanders
and the whole Eastern Conference first round would have been major rivalry series. I guess Rangers-Caps was a thing in the mid 2010s and Canes-Isles played a heated series last year but it's not the same.

They're eliminated from the playoffs, what do they have to lose trying their (hopefully) future PP quarterback on their top powerplay with their current unit. If they were going to the playoffs I'd agree with you but down the stretch of a lost season is <em>exactly</em> why you'd put an inexperienced 20-year-old on PP1.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>Would that count for pace as well (talking about the 41 in 56 season Matthews had to win the RR)?</div></div>
Yes, but only in the case where the season length was different. Something like Cam Neely's 1993-1994 where he scored 50 goals in 49 games wouldn't be adjusted because teams played 84 games that season, but for the shortened 2021 season the pace would be over 56 games (even though Matthews only played 52). That season would count for 63.5 season-adjusted goals, but unfortunately hockey-reference's single-season goal leader page doesn't show anyone with less than 47 goals in a season so it's not in the main list.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Yes, a relatively simple, nonsense calculation. And most of those 80s and 90s goal totals were done with wooden sticks, but that never gets mentioned. Or how certain crazy talented scoring teams threw off the averages. Or how clutching and grabbing and hooking and all sorts of things were allowed back then. No two line passes. Etc etc etc.
When folks start elevating 100% subjective, cherry picked and inherently faulty stats to gospel, it's just nonsense.</div></div>
I'm not going to debate you on your point that this adjustment is flawed and that the game has changed, but to say that I'm cherry-picking and being subjective are both wrong. Any era-adjustment is going to be flawed because you can't say exactly how much the game has changed. Does the improvement in goaltending equipment and skill offset the improvement in scorers' equipment and skill? Have the numerous rule changes over the years favoured one side or the other?
I use overall league goals per game because that serves as some kind of measurement as to how the offense/defense/goaltending balance has shifted over the years, though nothing can perfectly measure the difference between seasons, let alone eras.
What do you contend that I'm cherry-picking, and what am I cherry-picking in service of? I don't have a narrative to push, and I decided on the criteria and methodology before I saw any results. Similarly, I don't use any subjective measurements. League goals, league game and player goals are all countable, objective measurements, far from the 100% subjective that you claim.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Through the magic of his cherry picked "analytics" he says it's clear that this Matthews season is actually like the 7th best goal scoring season of all time. Some nonsense like that.</div></div>
Honestly that's not far-fetched given era adjustments, a lot of the huge raw goal numbers were achieved in the late 80s and early 90s when overall scoring was way up.
A relatively simple calculation, taking the raw goal number * 82 * 2023-24 goals per game, divided by season goals per game and number of games per team (to account for the fact that season lengths have been changed over time), puts Matthews' current season at number 15 all time if he doesn't score another goal all season, and 10th if he keeps up his goal scoring pace.
Edit: See this calculation for all 47+ goal scorers <a href="https://pastebin.com/jNaJxnSb" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank"> here</a>

Preventing Playoff Cap circumvention.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CantStopWontStop</b></div><div>I don’t get why
You cannot just say the roster of 23 has to be cap compliant.
If you’ve had injury, you use ltir to replace the skater.
When the skater returns, you have to field a cap team. That means somebody sits, which happens anyway when somebody comes back from injury.
You could still have a playoff roster that exceeds the cap between games, but at game time, the decisions have to be made.</div></div>
Roster size is unlimited during the playoffs, which is why Black Aces are a thing. There is no "23-man roster".
That said, ensuring that the 20-man is compliant every game is possible and a good idea.

Just a heads up, the teams making the finals only play a 4-day week, because the NHL season ends on April 11 (Thursday)
I cannot change the number of days per matchup to lengthen the finals at the expense of the second round, or anything like that.
I can, however, manually change scores, which lends itself to some extra possibilities.
Options (feel free to contribute other ideas):
Just play out the 4 day week and let the game decide who wins.
Double-count Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from the second round so that the finals still have 7 days.
Count fantasy points for each team's NHL Playoff Game 1 and add those to the total.
Any alternate options must be agreed upon by BOTH eventual finalists before the first puck drop on April 5, or else we just run with the 4-day finals.
