I mean, Copp is just an older, more expensive, marginally better Kotkaniemi. I don't see why the Canes should add a first in this scenario.

Take out Mikey Anderson and Scott Morrow and work around Necas + pick for Trevor Moore. Canes neeed RHD and not LHD, including those pieces makes that problem worse.

Where are all the Canes fans
Maybe I am being unreasonable, but it's just hockey. Do I want them to win the cup every year, of course. Was it disappointing that they lost, yes. The Rangers are a great team and Igor is possibly the best player in the league right now, **** happens. I'm happy to watch the Canes play in May after the 10 years that they missed the playoffs. No reason to rage - life moves on!

De way
I think Necas holds more value than Ehlers, I don't think the difference is a first. A lot of these UFA signings seems low on money and/or term, and Jarvis gets more on a 6 year deal (and at that point sign him for the full 8 years).

Not that they should necessarily do this, but the 5 million saved in this ACGM allows them to sign Zadorov.

Binner is a good goalie but also not such an upgrade on Andersen that the Canes should spend their 1st and send a prospect, doubly so since he makes more than the two current goalies on the Canes combined

Marner Stays to Finish Out Contract
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JackAce91</b></div><div>Not a leafs fan. Just saying that it isn't a wise move to let one of your top 3 most valuable assets leave for nothing. Look at Calgary for example. They let Johnny Hockey walk after he put up 115 points and they never recovered. Pietrangelo leaving the Blues, Panarin and Bobrovsky leaving CBJ. If you aren't sure you'll be able to resign a high end player, a team needs to be able to recoup something for him. A player with trade value like Marner can help kickstart a retool by trading for younger players or established player that otherwise won't hit free agency. Kinda like what the Jets did with PLD. That was a player that wasn't going to resign, so they traded him for a very good top 6 forward in Vilardi, very good middle-6 guy in Iafallo, plus a couple other assets. Marner has plenty more value, even with his high cap hit (which a 3rd team helping retain is becoming very common) and a NMC.</div></div>
1 year of rental Marner at almost 11 million likely does not have as much value as RFA PLD last summer, and that trade was panned as an overpay by LA.

Let a man DREAM DRAI AND NECAS
I should hope that a 22 year old who is at .6 ppg in the AHL is not the centerpiece of a Necas trade. Burns likely QBs the first PP unit and hopefully Morrow QBs the second, maybe Orlov, but I doubt Barron gets deployed as anything other than a 3RD, or a scratch if they manage to bring back Chatfield for cheap. Canes have a lot of cap to work with and Necas will be one of the first contracts they try to sign, this offer doesn't change that.

Carolina can afford his cap hit, but even if they couldn't look at what Fiala or Reinhart got. Those were both for their RFA rights, and both returned a 1st and a prospect.

Key Player Acquisitons
RFA rights are worth significantly more than UFA rights - the latter are traded because on July 1st they can sign with any team, so a team acquires their rights prior to negotiate and prevent another team from signing the UFA. RFAs by definition cannot sign with another team (unless they do not received a qualifying offer) without an offer sheet.
The Flyers could trade a 3rd or later round pick for Brett Pesce in order to sign him before other teams get the chance on July 1st if he is a target of theirs and they are worried another team will sign him. The Flyers cannot sign Martin Necas on July 1st - only the Canes can - so this trade is not enough.

D List
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wqrrior</b></div><div>i find it kinda crazy that canes fans would rather hang onto orlov on this contract than move it for nothing, resign guentzel and try and find a cheaper d core option. This makes perfect sense for me (tho i dont think pesce is back), but is constnatly rejected by them.
Im intrigued what blues fans think of moving that faulk contract. he might be worth something with retention, but i agree that his value is not strong at 6.5m</div></div>
They had the luxury of having a 7 million dollar D man on the third pair this year. With Nikishin coming next year and Slavin likely being re-signed, they can take a cheap one year LD rather than sign someone long term who would not have as many minutes as either of those two.

Ullmark has been elite in the regular season, somewhat inconsistent in playoffs. Freddie has been inconsistent in the regular season and pretty good in the playoffs. Regardless, Canes don't do this trade, that first can be used better than the upgrade of Andersen to Ullmark.

If KK costs that much to dump and they are not interested in keeping him, just buy him out. Pass on Morrow for Marner, someone who will likely be in the top 4 D next year at 1.15 M AAV is more valuable to the Canes that a winger at 10.9, especially if it means not having Dumba. Just no to that Ottawa trade, jeez.

The rebuilds done
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Campabee</b></div><div>LMFAO, on what planet do you seriously think any of those trades are possible?! Teams don't give up top 6 C's or top 4 RHD for middle 6 W's and no team is downgrading their W to help the Canes improve theirs. The best you are going to get is a futures package that allows you to free up cap space for a potential FA signing or a hockey trade that allows you to bolster another position like Matheson for Necas. You aren't going to get multiple top assets for a guy who 1. His own team doesn't believe is a top 6 center 2. Disappears in the playoffs 3. Can't play defense against timbits players.</div></div>
Then the Canes keep Necas? I feel like the implication at least in a couple of those scenarios is Necas packaged with a first/prospect, but the Canes have 0 incentive to trade Necas for a collection of pieces that don't fill a need.

Probably not the reason the poster you're replying to is thinking, but the Canes save more against the cap by buying out Kotkaniemi than if they retain this much on him.

this reduces the commitment from 6 years to 2 years for carolina. its pretty obvious kotkaniemi is on the outside right now</div></div>
Then they buy him out with a cap penalty of 835k/year. The cap commitment for 6 or 2 years won't matter, the biggest cap crunch is this coming offseason - if they can get through it with KK on the roster (which I believe is the goal but may not ultimately be possible), then they would prefer to have him. As you pointed out above he is younger and a center, he still has a lot of time to turn it around.
To that end, he's still 23 so the 1/3 buyout is available next offseason as well. I could see a team taking him on with a late pick and trying to get him to work, to then buy him out next offseason for even less against the cap - again, only if the Canes are unable to keep everyone they want this summer.
