Toronto Maple Leafs signed William Nylander (8 Years / $11,500,000 AAV)
My thoughts are that the Leafs ride it out over the next 2 seasons with Tavares and Marner playing out their current contracts. Then, they'll have the option to rethink their top-heavy strategy. Only then, will the big 4 become the big 3 and they can build a true Cup contender with depth. And if Marner's next contract has a floor of 13% of total cap, then maybe the big 4 becomes. the big 2.

This is exactly why you should sign players before the massive offensive season occurs. That's easier said than done, but it's done all the time. Waiting 3 months into the season cost the Leafs about 15-20% more AAV. If they have the confidence that he's worth this much over the next 8 years, then why didn't they have the confidence to sign him for less during the summer? And yes, I highly doubt he'd have turned down $9.5M or $10M AAV for 8 years before this season started.

Rico torches the devils every time he plays back in jersey. Ray Sheri made a lot of mistakes as Devils GM and trading Rico was certainly one of them. But these things happen.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>Imagine if you could trade coaches for assets
Sullivan would be a prize to many teams
Toronto (depends what happens this playoffs)
Ottawa (got to think Smith fired no?)
Islanders, Devils, Sabers, Kraken, Blues, etc.
Cooper I feel with his recent success and the fact Vasi was out for the start of the season he gets 1-2 more years</div></div>
I hope fans understand that firing a great coach like Sullivan would be done to freshen things up b/c they’re not true contenders anymore. Coop won much more recently - I agree he has a much longer leash.
Either coach would probably bring a 2nd rounder at least. I think you’d have to make the pick conditional. If the new team wins the Cup, they have to add a 1st rounder. Then again, STL went from worst to first w/ Burube and he could’ve been acquired for Future Considerations, if anything.

Sullivan will be interesting. To bad you cant trade coaches as come next offseason if Pitt decides rebuild teams will keep a close eye on him</div></div>
My guess is that PIT rides out the season with MS and they “mutually agree to part ways”. Isn’t that what usually happens when they want to save face?
I can see either MS or Coop w/ the Devils next season.

Imagine Raanta’s numbers on a worse defensive team. If he couldn’t get it done in Carolina, I don’t see him anywhere. He’s finished in the NHL, imo.

It does seem like there's been an inordinate number of surprises so far this season. The fact that CHI has been predictably bad and still has a higher Points % than EDM is probably the biggest, imo.

Blake Wheeler just picked up his first point, an Assist, with the Rangers. It took 7 games. Then the goal was overturned. Oh well.
I love how WPG loses 2 of their top 6 forwards, and doesn't really replace them, and actually gets better!

Hard to believe just how bad EDM is without Connor. Or maybe his absence just proves how valuable he is to turn a bottom tier team into a solid playoff team. Without him, they're with the Flames in the basement.

The NHL (and every other league) pushes sports gambling down the throats of every player and fan 24/7/365. It's no surprise that athletes are getting in trouble. Next time a pro sports league wants to impose their corporate ethical ideology on society, just remember that corporate greed always takes precedence over doing what's right.

Both goalies have been pretty bad, but Hamilton needs to start playing defense. He was burned for several 2 on 1's last night. That's been the biggest difference from last year so far. The team looks like they want to win every game by trading chances rather than doing what they did last year.

This time share Power Play is the worst idea imaginable for the Devils. Imagine splitting up McDavid, Drai, and RNH. Separating Jack from Nico and Dougie is almost as dumb. They need to load up the first unit and leave Jack out there as long as he wants, preferably 1:30+, like many other superstars do. Let's start winning some games before we get all creative!

Try to forget about the fact that he'll be 37 when this deal expires. Fair AAV on a 4-5 year deal would've priced the Avs out of the market, hence the 7 years year term. Toews is certainly worth $9M+ AAV right now.

These types of contracts almost never backfire. Chabot's did, but his floor was a lot lower than Power's. This is as close to a slam dunk as you can get for a young defenseman, imo. My only issue is that BUF would've been better off w/ 8 years. Still an A+ signing.

Clearly, the Jets still see themselves as legit contenders. They do have some holes in their lineup, but they have enough high end talent to do some damage if the puck bounces their way. I think this is a A- contract for the Jets.
