Moving up

Team: 2024-25 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 5, 2024
Published: May 12, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A long term core this team can run with is incredible

Slaf - Suzuki - Caufield
Newhook - Dach - Demidov
Roy - Beck - Robo
Harvey Pinard - Armia/Evans - Gallagher

Hudson - Reinbacher
Guhle - Wifi
Matheson - Liljegren

Liljegren can slot up one over Xhekaj but Guhle - Wifi has more experience with one another so I went with what I knew.

I'm also not convinced Newhook is a 2nd line guy on a contending team, but maybe I'm just hating, plus the Dach/Demidov duo would be nasty.

You also might notice that there's a couple players listed in scratched, including Harris, Kovacevic, and Anderson. None of these guys make sense as long term fits in this lineup. Either of the young D can be kept around as the 7th D, but neither have a ceiling that places them above the guys in the lineup. For Anderson, he's still NHL caliber and you can probably scratch RHP for a few games, but ideally you trade his contract elsewhere to avoid spending over 5 mil on a 4th liner and who doesn't fit your long term plans.

You can take a 2nd off the Dvorak deal and the points remain the same

Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Liljegren, Timothy [RFA Rights]
  2. Robertson, Nicholas [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Montreal gets two guys who fit the timeline and immediately join the roster and fit as long term role players. Liljegren would be a Savard replacement while Robo is like Caufield lite.
TOR
  1. Dvorak, Christian ($1,200,000 retained)
  2. 2025 2nd round pick (MTL)
  3. 2025 3rd round pick (NJD)
  4. 2026 2nd round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Dvorak fits the 3c role that the Leafs currently let Pontus Holmberg occupy. Dvorak would be a good fit as a forechecker and two way presence that makes sense along side the teams top stars, and the retention brings some much needed cap flexibility. The picks, along with closing the gap in value between players, are important to the Leafs as future trade chips.

MTL
  1. 2024 1st round pick (CHI)
Additional Details:
2nd OA

Montreal has tons of young talent and few roster spots, and with an obvious lack of top end wingers, moving up to grab the Michkov clone after you skipped on the real thing last draft makes the most sense. Having excess young talent is cool until you have to give them all ice time to develop, and this move opens up a spot for all the guys with a long term role on the team doesn't give anything away that Montreal would miss too bad.

In case it wasn't clear already, Montreal grabs Demidov here
CHI
  1. Mailloux, Logan
  2. Mesar, Filip
  3. 2024 1st round pick (MTL)
  4. 2024 1st round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
5th OA + 27th OA

Chicago has a generational talent to build around, and as tempting as it is to use the 2nd overall oa pick to get him his forever linemate to flash shades of the Toews/Kane duo of old, this team has waaaaay less prosects than they'd need to feel confident about this team going forward. Even if you include unsigned prospects, the amount of long term prospects, especially on the wings and RHD are lacking, something this trade adds immediately, letting Chicago to pick up an ex first round wing and ex first round RHD, plus the 5th oa still grabs them one of Eiserman or Lindstrom.

So the leafs get a worse, more expensive player than robertson and also now have to find another top 4 defender, didnt know they were tanking next season

Liljegren was never a top 4 defender

He literally is one right now. A number 4 guy is a top 4 defender. This isnt like when habs fans pretend savard isnt a 7th defenceman on any team that's half decent

Top 4 defenders usually don't get scratched come playoff time. He's incredibly weak defensively

Waaayyy too much of an overpay to both Chicago and Toronto. The difference between Robertson and Dvorak (retained) is a 3rd from Toronto, centers have more value than wingers. A 2nd for Liljegren is fair value but Hughes already said he is not trading for D that block Mailloux and Reinbacher from developing in the NHL in the next year or two. All this to say you are a 2nd + 3rd too high from the Habs and missing a 3rd from the Leafs.

As for the Chicago trade, the cost to move up 3 spots in the draft (even in the top 5) is a 2nd, an overpayment would be Mesar. Therefor you are 2 1st round picks too high for that one (Mailloux and the Flames 1st)

I don't know Logan Mailloux and barely know of what he did. BUT I do know the Hawks as an organization can't handle it even if you paid us the 5th OA. I personally believe in 2nd chances. But it's possible for two things to be true at the same time. You couldn't pay the Hawks enough to take him off your hands.

Yeah, that coach who just got fired for being terrible and making all sorts of terrible roster decisions all the time totally had it right. And you do realize that offensive leaning defenders can be top 4 guys right? And that there are different ways to play defence, right? Liljegren is fine at some, good at others and bad at others still. But he's the very definition of 4th defender. IE a flawed guy who cant carry a 2nd pairing but is good with a guy who can.

Hawks decline. Rather just take Demidov or Levshunov. Mailloux in Chicago would be an image and PR disaster.

Liljegren has never been a top 4 defender. If he was, the team wouldn’t be constantly looking for a top 4 right handed guy.
You can’t blame Keefe for Liljegren’s poor performance. Keefe gave him tons of chances to take the spot and run with it and he never has.
Liljegren couldn’t crack the top 4 on a defence core with the likes of Brodie, Benoit, Giordano, Edmundson, and Lybushkin. All those guys are #6 defenders at best, but mostly #7 guys all year and Liljegren couldn’t consistently stay ahead of them.

Timothy Liljegren is a #6/7 defender. Argue all you want with your usual incredibly bias opinion, but it still doesn’t make it right.

Yes he has been, and they are looking for a top pairing rhd, not a 2nd pairing one, or at least a 3rhd who can carry a 4th defender lhd like,oh i dunno ,mccabe.
Instead they keep bringing in bottom pairing rhd who are worse than liljegren and keefe kept playing them because he is a bad coach, you cant blame liljegren for keefes bad performance.
You can argue with that all you want, but your incredible bias doesnt make you right

Liljegren is not really a top 4 defender. He's only ever there because we lack genuine top 4 RD. While I have advocated for Keefe's firing for years now, he's given Lily ample opportunity in bigger roles throughout the last two seasons. There's a reason he's never been able to crack the top line with Mo, he's not that good.

On a true contending team with a D core NOT comprised of bottom 6 defenders, he's a bottom 6 defender himself.

And as for the "looking for someone to carry McCabe" comment, it's actually McCabe who's carried Lily the majority of this season. Lily has always needed someone better than him to boost his metrics and make him look better than he is.

I'm 100% down to move Lily, but only if it's for a genuine upgrade.

Can’t disagree with a single thing you said and none of it is opinion it’s all fact.. but I can bet you that the other guy will still argue you! 🙄
