They are able to get the **** out of Russia, so good for them. And if they play a single game in the NHL, it will be better than most 6th round draftees manage.

This dude scored almost a point per game in the KHL as a 22 year old last year. It is very likely he will see the ice in the NHL and be the first late round Avs pick to do so since Tyson Barrie (if 3rd round even counts as late round). We SUCK at drafting guys after round 1. This is a huge win for our scouting department.

The only thing that sucks about it for the Avs is that we get him in the NHL for barely over 1 season. It's great we get him at all don't get me wrong; it's just not the same as other prospects signing a 3 year ELC with the hope you get 2+ seasons on the cheap.

On the flip side, he’s still RFA status at the end of the deal and for a 6th rd draft pick out of Russia, the fact he’s even coming over and should be NHL matter, is found money to begin with

True; so I want him to be "good" but not great; then sign a cheap 3-year extension as soon as possible and THEN light it up

If I could lock him in today as a player who will be a steady 40-45pt middle 6F, I’d do it.

He’s got no proven track record to suggest he will light it up so badly that COL couldn’t afford him once this deal is done. Don’t think there’s cause for concern there. And let’s say he does light it up, 65-70pts, now RFA and COL can’t sign him. Well, we still own his RFA rights, could be traded for a good haul still.

Point being, he’s found money at this point

Avalanche 6th Round Draft Picks to even have a cup of coffee in the NHL: Brian Willsie, Charlie Stephens, David Aebischer, Jonas Holos, Riku Hahl, Justin Mercier and Nils Aman (with freaking Vancouver). If he plays more than 40 games with the Avs he will be the best 6th round pick in team history (maybe other than Aebischer). He is all sorts of found money.

Still can't believe the Avs got Kovalenko in the sixth round. He's such a crafty kid, so talented. Great stuff
