How would you make this unfair trade more fair for Calgary

What are some high end picks / prospects you would want from the Habs in exchange for #9 overall ?

2. OTT had games in hand most of those teams...
All OTT needed to do was win the games in front of them and they would have clinched... To suggest that they were heavy underdogs isn't a very well thought-out comment or recency bias</div></div>
1. That's because the guy that hired was Eugene Melnyk.
I recommend reading these two pieces by Ian Mendes to get a good glimpse on how competent Melnyk / Dorion actually were.
It's crazy.

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/4802912/2023/11/03/ottawa-senators-pierre-dorion-fired/
2. Ottawa did not have games in hand over Buffalo or Pittsburgh and those two teams were ahead of Ottawa in the standings on March 1st, 2023.
https://www.nhl.com/standings/2023-03-01/wildcard
Buffalo even had a game in hand over Ottawa.
All Buffalo and Pittsburgh had to do was keep pace and stay ahead of Ottawa.
Buffalo and Pittsburgh would then have clinched and Ottawa would have missed.
And that's without taking into account the need to leapfrog Washington and Florida without stumbling.
That made Ottawa a clear underdog to make the playoffs.

Lindholm was not a tier above Chychrun when he was traded from Anaheim.
And in exchange for taking a multi-year cap dump, Anaheim got a depth defenceman that was a former 1st round pick.
And it is common for a team that is trading a player to give permission to seriously interested teams to negotiate an extension with said player.
In Chychrun's case, the 5 week wait until July 1st is nothing more than a formality.
And how do you know there will be no extension in place for Chychrun ??
Why would the team trading for him not want an extension in place ??
You're only going down this rabbit hole that has absolutely nothing to do with the Devils because I committed the cardinal sin of suggesting trading the #10 overall pick for Markstrom.

Yes, it does.
Hampus Lindholm fetched a 1st + two 2nds after having a mediocre season with Anaheim and signed an extension with Boston the next day.
And it doesn't matter that Chychrun needs to wait 5 weeks for the extension because the extension will already be ironed out and agreed to beforehand with the team that acquires him.
There's no pretending here.

Except that Chychrun won't be a rental when he signs an extension with the team that trades for him.
And there will be other teams that will be interested in Chychrun for which a playoff run isn't even a guarantee.
If a team risks waiting until the deadline to trade for Chychrun, it might be already too late if that team is in grave danger of missing the playoffs.

1. If you think that Dorion was competent enough to place a value on a draft pick, then you're just as competent as he is.
2. On March 1st of 2023, Ottawa had to leapfrog the following teams to clinch a wild card spot:
Washngton
Florida
Buffalo
And then either the Pens or the Isles
To suggest they were anything but a heavy underdog to clinch a wild card spot at the time would be optimistic at best.

You don't get to decide what a normal trade return is for Ottawa.
And the team that trades for Chychrun will get a full 82 game season out of him at 2.3 million.
As opposed to when Hanifin was traded as a pending UFA at the deadline.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>That's not true... If you're value of the pick is pick 7... You will be less likely to trade it... Think Treliving vs Dubas, Dubas was more likely to trade away the Leafs 1st bc he thought it would be pick 32... Whereas Tre valued the pick at pick 20-25, thus valuing it as such. It's why you don't see rebuilding teams trading their 1sts often and if they do, it's for a lot.
And that's fair... But Ottawa was also just 6 points back, Dorion was obviously making a playoff push</div></div>
On March 1st, 2023, Ottawa was ranked #22 in the league.
https://www.nhl.com/standings/2023-03-01/league
Which means Ottawa held the 11th best lottery odds on a pick that ultimately ended up being #12 overall.
The pick should have been evaluated based on where it was at the time, not on what it could become under the most ideal scenario.
If a GM can't see that, he shouldn't have a job.
Also, the # of teams you need to leapfrog to clinch a playoff spot is just as important as the # of points you need to catch up to those teams.
If not more so.

So cmarch's point is correct as Dorion thought, at the time of the trade, that the pick would be in the 16th-20th range, and making the 2nd in the 50-55 range...
That fact that OTT faded at the end had nothing to do with Dorion's perceived value of spending those assets</div></div>
It doesn't matter what Dorion thought the picks were worth at the time.
What matters is where the picks ultimately ended up.
Also, the wild card spots in the East were held by Pittsburgh and the Isles on March 1st, 2023.

Ottawa had to leapfrog not just Florida, but at least 3 other teams in the East as well.

According to the Puckpedia draft pick value calculator, the New York Islanders win the trade.

Before doing something like this ever again, I recommend that Chicago show some patience and wait until the draft is actually underway.

1. I'm not asking for the same return I gave out for him.
#12 overall pick in 2023 >>>>>> Top 10 Protected 1st from Tampa.
2. Chychrun just played a full 82 game season, Ottawa is retaining half of his salary and he'll sign an extension with whichever team acquires him.
His production rate is down because he's Ottawa's #3 left shot defenceman behind Sanderson and Chabot.
3. If it's an "easy pass" on Brannstrom, then why was it not an "easy pass" on Lauzon ?
And if you don't like the asking price on Chychrun, then I can't even begin to fathom how squeamish you'll be when you pay the asking price on Marner.
