Bonk
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DH28Hockey</b></div><div>Bonk and Musty both played their way onto the OHL 1st All-Star team, with Bonk basically acting as the #1D (yes Dickinson is great but Bonk had a better year) on a team that's about to win the Memorial Cup. I just don't really understand how you can plant the flag that Musty had a "much better D+1" when all of the numbers show they performed at a fairly similar level. Cagnoni had a nice D+1 but I think it's a huge stretch to call him better than Bonk at this point, they're both projecting fairly similarly in terms of D+1 growth, and it'd be extremely naive to think that the 5'9 lefty is going to have a better chance at success than the nearly 6'3 righty. Lastly, Robinson (and Elite Prospects in general) as a scouting agency have always been untypically low on Smith and untypically high on Musty. The majority of scouts had Smith as a top-5 pick heading into the draft and Musty as a mid-late 1st at highest. Elite Prospects had them like 3 spots away from each other, which was by *far* the closest anyone had them.</div></div>
Sorry but right around point per game is expected for a projected 1st/2nd pairing D-man, especially in their draft +1 year. He plays a very solid defensive game as well so added points for that. I think he's an incredibly safe player with very little flaws but his ceiling is not super high. Cagnoni is much riskier, but very good defensively and laterally had a historic season offensively (most points by a d-man in the WHL since 1993). Size will always be talked about with him but he's literally heavier than Bonk lol His physicality shouldn't be questioned.

Whether or not either team does it is up for debate (personally I don't think either team would), but Bonk-Musty is absolutely a fair swap on a pure value basis</div></div>
Musty had an MUCH better draft +1 season than Bonk, by like a huge margin. In fact I think the Sharks got a better D-man than Bonk in this draft in Cagnoni, and I don't think Cagnoni is on the same level as Musty.
Cam Robinson from Elite Prospects talked to Sheng Peng about how he thinks Musty is as good if not better than Smith.

I would not call Cooley's rookie season great by any means. Solid but very poor defensively.
Nemec on the other hand, I'd put on par with Slaf. He looks like a star. Wright has also been very good. I think he's still absolutely top 5

This article has a 3 way trade in which the Flyers wind up with Marner and SJ gets Bonk. Take TML out of it and it's basically Ferraro and SJ's 2024 2nd for Bonk. If that's the price for Bonk the Sharks should decline imo.</div></div>
Yeah, that's crazy. Ferraro's not going anywhere.
And the price to move up in the 2024 draft from 14 to 8-12 would be MUCH less than that proposal, and they'd get a better d-prospect than Bonk there

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>capsleafs447</b></div><div>Strongly disagree, particularly about Pageau.
Look at Mantha. People on Capfriendly were saying he was a cap dump after one meh season and then he bounced back and netted a second and a third. This happens frequently. Dumping them when their value is the lowest is just bad business. And Pageau is great defensively and worth his cap hit.
It's the same thing with David Kampf where people just look at their points totals and ignore their on-ice play and defensive capabilities. Neither are cap dumps just because of their point totals. Defense matters.</div></div>
"one meh season" Pageau has been bad since joining the islanders, so that comparison doesn't make sense. If the Islanders can afford to keep him and build a team that competes then great, keep him.
If not, then he's a cap dump. His cap hit is much higher than the value he brings. If you need to move a player like that, then it's a cap dump.

If these players were making 2-3m they would be completely different stories. They are still good enough to be 3rd liners, they are just significantly overpaid, but because of our cap situation we can afford it.
IF we can get really solid UFAs on 1-3 year deals I am all for it. I just don't know how realistic that actually is</div></div>
I agree with that. Granlund was technically a cap dump. there's some guys I'd definitely be interested in from teams that can't fit them, but Pageau, Mikheyev, and Schmidt aren't those guys.
I think for UFAs, Chatfield, DeMelo, Pesce, Roy, etc would be good targets for D-men (some more likely than others). Domi, Stephenson, Duchene, for forward tragets. We'll see what happens with Celebrini, but having him and Smith signed would really show free agents that it could be a good place to play and then get dealt to contender

I disagree. Cap dumps are cap dumps for a reason. They're not playing well. that's not the type of player Grier should be bringing over.
You can overpay some really solid UFAs on 1-3 year deals and actually help the team play competitive hockey, then deal them for better assets than the one's you'd get for taking on a cap dump.

Just stop.
You make up straw man points and ramble.
The points were never that MC isn't a good player. Never. The point was he's not a franchise level guy and teams need that guy to be real contenders and analytics prove that.
If you can't get that, sit down.
God knows you can stop trying to throw his name next to Crosby and show some "model" that puts him to comparable to Crosby and McDavid.... he's not, and people who do such things are click bait idiots.
There are serious qualitative differences between him and those two. It's not even a close comparable. You should be embarrassed rambling that nonsense and thinking anyone should take it seriously.
Yes we know he's a got a chance to be a good young player... your hype nonsense strawman nonsense.
Lafrenière is a good player too, star portential...... but he's not a FP and people knew that at draft. But you have to get past the click bait hype machine that you think is just "fine" to get that far.
But you clearly aren't reading or have 0 ability to comprehend as that your strawman was never the point.
The point was a whole lot of people talking "future looks bright".... well future looks like mediocrity without a FP forward and analytics show that.
He's not that. Good player, yes, FP no. There is no indication of that right now.
NO FP....NO real contender constant uphill climb. That's what analytics show in the league.
I don't make the rules, I just point out the facts of history.
You over here arguing like you're his mom.</div></div>
NHLe is without a doubt the dumbest stat and anyone could possibly use and it should be banned from this site. Anyone trying to use it as an predictor/indicator for a player is just admitting they know nothing about hockey

Leafs fans clearly think he's a replaceable middle/bottom pairing d-man, considering their d-core is not very good and yet he's being dealt in half the leafs ACGMs.

It's not super likely Sharks are able to sign either Pesce or Roy. If they do I think it would be one or the other, not both.
Benning has been injured for so long that I think we Sharks fans forget that he was an excellent middle paring guy. I think a guy like Chatfield would be more likely if they do want to move on from him.
Personally i'd be more interested in someone like Stephenson than Henrique

That's just not true. there's plenty of equally as good forwards. Other teams ahead of the sharks would want a forward instead of a d-man. They can trade up with those teams. And yes Cagnoni and Shakir have the ceiling to be #1 guys.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WastingTimeWithTradeNobodyLikes</b></div><div>all players that reach the NHL are competitive and winners. thats an overrated argument. they need to get star players through draft.</div></div>
No, an overrated argument is teams should tank for ever and ever until they get the PERFECT prospect pool. That encourages a losing culture that is incredibly hard to get out of.
I didn't say the players aren't competitive, I'm saying the team structure is BUILT not to be competitive because the players just aren't good enough. Which get's you in this loop of sucking for decades

And the very good d are in this draft, they could easily trade up with their 14th overall pick to get a very good D-prospect. or get a very good D-man in the 3-10 range next year.
Never mind Shakir and Cagnoni who are absolute studs. And then Thrun, Pohlkamp, Pulli, Emberson, Furlong, Havelid, etc. in their system.

Hitting cap floor + establishing a competitive culture. Shouldn't expect to be out of the top 5, but they should be playing hockey, which is something they weren't capable of doing last year
