He's still pretty young, his buyout in 2026 would be ~$5.67M over 8 years, which isn't a bad cap hit. It's a pretty expensive risk though, a team would have to be willing to light some money on fire if he doesn't pan out.

I mean, Copp is just an older, more expensive, marginally better Kotkaniemi. I don't see why the Canes should add a first in this scenario.

I think people sell Copp's game a little short, especially with his contract being what it is, people expect more. Copp has more points in fewer playoff games, and I think he would mesh well with Martinook. I'd like to see Copp stay in Detroit and maybe sign a hometown discount on his next deal.

Either way, the reason I added the 1st is the total money works out to + $15M for Detroit. You could argue over buyout cost and maybe talk me down to a 2nd, but I don't think this deal could be no picks
