(NYR/CAR) - Skjei for a 2020 1st round pick
a fun side effect of this trade - with the Rangers possibly pushing for the playoffs themselves and CAR/TOR being direct contenders to the wild card spots, the Rangers are possibly improving their own draft position by winning.

New York Rangers signed Chris Kreider (7 Years / $6,500,000 AAV)
I wonder if the people commenting here ever watched Kreider play. he's neither Milan Lucic nor entirely foot speed reliant - yes, he is crazy fast, but he is also very strong and good at holding off defenders, which, combined with his speed, makes him incredibly hard to defend when breaking to the net.
however, he is also maybe one of THE best net front presences in the league - his number of deflection/tip in goals is only rivaled by Pavelski, and he scored 34 goals in his age 34 season. due to his lower arm strength, he also has a very good snap shot release. his skill set is very difficult to replace and the Rangers did well here with the AAV. Kreiders issue has been consistency, but prior to Zibanejad, he never played with an elite center who's skill set complimented him particularily well.
and as for the term - I don't think this is as bad as people here want it to be - as with all UFA signings, the back years of the contract have lesser salary to make them tradable and you sign them past their prime to pay FOR their prime. this happens every single time, and the issues only arise if those players drop off immediately. if the Rangers see their window of contention in 2-3 years, they did everything right here.

- They'll also need to sign a few UFA's to round out the roster in a couple years (ex: Shattenkirk, Stall and Smith replacements)</div></div>
it's the other way around - these expiring are the reason they cant give him a long term deal just yet. in order to sign everyone, these will have to be replaced from within the farm system for the bottm 2-3 roles, which doesnt look unrealistic at the moment

Buffalo and Edmonton apparently were very high on him. they wanted to trade back but couldn't find the right deal, and you don't want to trade back just to get your man snatched away because another team was high on him too. you're convinced of your man, you take your man.

New York Rangers signed Artemi Panarin (7 Years / $11,642,857 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BeastModeUnknown</b></div><div>That's a definite over payment.</div></div>
Panarin definitely left money on the table - his cap hit would have been considerably higher if he had accepted CBJs offer, so this is far from an overpayment from this perspective. comparing him to Matthews is also nonsense, since you're buying 100% UFA years with Panarin. big UFAs cost money, they will cost more money every year, and it's WAY better to spend this money on first line talent in it's prime than on 2 aging veterans you could get for the same money.
the Rangers cap situation may look concerning, but it's not as bad as it looks like - this year is the only year in which the Girardi buyout costs 3,6M instead of 1,1M. Smith and Beleskey will probably be buried in the AHL and Namestnikov is getting traded imo - his contract is not an anchor and he is still a useful player, but it's hard to justify the cap hit. he's good enough to be tradeable with a return rather than a sweetener. Staal and Lundqvist will come off the books before the young players stepping up will require big deals themselves.
this season, the Rangers might not be contenders yet. when everyone grows into their supposed role on the team, this team looks DANGEROUS. give it one or two years - until then, I hope there won't be immediate panic among the fans if it doesn't pan out as they might expect due to the hype of the past weeks.

(WPG/NYR) - Trouba for Pionk & 1st round pick (#20 - WPG)
the Rangers had one of the worst D-corps in the last 2 years and turned that around big time without giving up substantial pieces on F or big prospects. that is absolutely amazing.
makes me wonder how the defense actually shapes up imo. RHS has Trouba, Fox, and DeAngelo, which makes me wonder about the prospects for Shattenkirk and Smith. While the LHS still has Skjei on top and Claesson should be a lock on the 3rd pairing, Rykov could be a surprise but who knows?, which leaves just Hajek and Staal.. ideally Staal and Smith sit and Shattenkirk shifts to W
Skjei - Trouba
Rykov - Fox
Claesson - DeAngelo
Hajek
Smith
Staal
and Hartfords defense looks much better too with Bigras on top, then Lindgren, Keane, Reunanen, Crawley, Day and Gilmour. amazing depth imo

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabsForEver</b></div><div>The term is noticable why? He's going to be 33 which is at the end of his prime. You are acting like it's until he's 40 years old.</div></div>
the end of the prime for most players is more around 29-30. at 31, many UFA signings that were made prior (while the player was in his prime) look like an afterthought and Ladd/Eriksson immediately come to mind.

it may not be a huge overpayment, but if you give out 6x6 (the term here is notable!), you really shouldn't cite "chemistry" as an argument. it's a lot of cap space for a middle 6 center who hit 50 points once.
if the term was 1-2 years less, one could argue this was an "okay" deal.

maybe due to the emotional value of Zuccarello, I think this is a terrible trade. I just don't see them extending Zuccarello and the WCF chances for Dallas are more than slim. really disappointing return for one of the greatest Rangers of the past decade.

Tom Wilson is an embarrassment
the best (and only) thing Caps fans can come up with to defend is that he didn't his head directly. this should tell you everything.
it's still
-from behind
-blindsided
-late
-open ice
-with no intent to avoid contact
add to that he publicly said he doesn't know why he's so vilified and that he's fresh off a ong suspension - this just proves that he hasn't learned anything. his reckless attitude towards other players is a disgrace, plain and simple. you're willfully ignoring that if you defend this hit by saying that he didn't hit his head.
