Don't know what they're thinking locking an unproven player up for this long and this much.

Steal or Bust contract.

So it's not gonna be a fair value contract?

Panthers are putting a lot of faith in 17 point Dman, to offer that contract. Time will tell. .Compared to Ekblad's deal, Matheson's deal might be a steal.

Ekblad has all the talent in the world, he just can't stay healthy. That's what might hold him back

Matheson? They could have waited for Sergei Bobrovsky or a better DMAN for Ekblad and co.

Matheson has great potential, but why pay long and hard for unrealized potential?

Not good to many years for unproven player. And way to high salary. It should have been a 2 year $2,000,000 show me contract deal.

A guy from Missouri want a "show me" contract. Most appropriate.

The kid is an underrated talent. Locking him up now is smart. 8 years is a little bit of a unnecessary gamble IMO this just feels like they want to be "that" team that has a star player for cheap but I've seen this guy play in multiple places. Real deal. Not Erik Karlsson scoring ability but a top 2-4 two way dman who can put up 30-40 points a year. Kind of like a Ryan McDonagh style player. Not a juggernaut in any specific area. Just good in everything.

IMO He was the best dman last year in Florida.

Eight years? Gross over payment for way too long. I bet there are a ton of fourth line forwards regretting that coach's 'opportunity' to switch to playing on D...

Either he ends up being great and they have him cheap for the next 8 years, or he isn’t as good and they have to pay this guy $4 M for the next 8 years.

I like the move for lots of reasons. Some of which I understand it's what most people wouldn't say is a big deal, but to me...an 8 year deal for less than $5M is year is pretty darn good. Even if you think he's going to be a 2nd pair dman at best. Just think 5 years from now when he's 28 and finally in his defensive prime making less than $5M a year. Crazy contracts are being given out right now. He wants to be apart of Florida which is another thing that's pretty amazing. People Laud Shane Doan for his entire career in AZ and this is a guy that wants to be a shane doan type player...just wants a little more success. It's a risk reward scenario and I applaud Florida for seeing an opportunity and taking it.
