Why would Vancouver make that trade?

They would make this trade to acquire two prospects, one being 2016 1st round draft pick Brett Howden, coming off a pretty successful WHL season and who has the skills available to potentially become a top-six forward. The other being Matthew Spencer who looks to be a pretty good defence prospect who was drafted in the 2nd round in 2015. Callahan could also be a great role player for the team and rub off some veteran leadership and experience on the younger forwards. He would be valuable to a young growing team and the Canucks have the cap space to keep him. Also, next year the Canucks will have 14 million dollars freed up from the Sedin' contracts and will need some contracts to keep above the cap floor.
