This is a swap that gives both teams an asset that is useful both now and for the future. This deal assumes that the Stars re-sign Chris Tanev for a few years and do well in the UFA market for a defenceman or two over the next couple of years as well.

Dallas may not re-sign Matt Duchene, and if they do, he's already 33 years old (by Dec. 31, 2024) and won't be around for more than a few more years anyway. Benn is getting old and won't be around forever, Seguin isn't getting any younger.. Necas is a player they can sign for the long run to continue their run of contention.

Robertson - Hintz - Necas
Benn - Johnston - Stankoven
Marchment - Seguin - Dadonov
Dellandrea - Faksa - Steel

Carolina acquires young right shot D-man Nils Lundkvist .. Brent Burns isn't going to be around much longer (presumably), Orlov is in his 30s and probably won't be re-signed after 2024-25 given his high cap hit, and Pesce is likely not to return either. Let's say they don't re-sign Orlov after the coming season, then Nikishin steps right in for 2025-26. Morrow starts on the third pairing with the reliable Chatfield to spot him, before moving up the depth chart after Burns retires or if he shows better than Lundkvist already.

Slavin - Burns
Orlov - Lundkvist
Chatfield - Morrow

Dallas would do this trade, but I'm not sure Carolina does unless there's an additional piece thrown in. Necas, at his worst, is at least usable in the starting lineup & at his best, he's a solid top-9 piece that could put up 50+ points a season.

Lundkvist, at his worst, is a 7th defenseman that cannot play a lick of defense. Offensive potential might be there, but Dallas is barely using him in the postseason due to how bad he is in his own half of the rink. If Carolina needs to move on from Necas (for cap or any other reason) then Lundkvist might make sense as a project for them to take on, but I don't see it being a 1-for-1 trade. Necas value outweighs Lundkvist's right now, IMO.

If the Canes are interested in this trade (they won't be), then pretty much every NHL team in the league would have a similar player to offer them for Necas.
