You absolutely don’t need to pay to get rid of Tavares, let alone pay a first

It will cost to move his $11M cap hit, and it's not going to be much cheaper. 65 points doesn't justify a $11M cap hit and very few teams have that kind of cap space

LMAO yes you do. Nobody is taking on JT at a $11M cap hit for 65 points....his cap hit is WAY inflated for what he provides. If he was $5M to $7M he's moveable without paying, but at $4M to $6M over market value, 1000% Toronto has to pay to move him and only a very few teams can fit $11M in cap space.

Everyone outside of GTA knows that. he's their aging player so JT is worth a haul

there's a pretty wide gulf between getting a fantastic return for him and having to give up a 1st to move him. A Tavares trade would be somewhere in the middle and there would probably be a not great contract returning to balance it out, say (not saying anyone does this, just using the contract vs on ice value as an example) the Foligno contract for Chicago.

Does not matter. No way he waives to go anywhere. He got the NTC through the whole contract exactly for this situation

ok, but what does that have to do with his theoretical trade value? No one actually thinks he's gonna waive.

Absolutely so not, yeah he makes about 2-3 million too much, but he had 65 points on what was a down year. If someone wants him they can pay for retention.

The most likely scenario is that the leafs don’t trade their captain away and he returns. If Tavares was completely useless and didn’t produce then sure trade away a valuable asset, but it’s only one year, and I think they learned from their Marleau mistake

Toronto wants to dump the whole 11M. Even if he agrees its not happening until after July 1 becuase no team is taking him and paying out a 10.3m bonus. Shanascam has to eat that. You might get a 2nd pair D, a prospect and a 3rd for him

yes, that is what reasonable people expect in any tavares trade.

Everyone judges a guy purely on his offensive production like points are the only thing that matters in contracts.

Tavares is a leader on and off the ice professionally. He is elite in the faceoff circle. He is a marketable star that sells tickets. He’s still tough to handle down low on the cycle and protects the puck very well. He’s been a captain everywhere he plays.

Those are things that don’t show up on a scoresheet that justify his value. Is he worth the $11m at this point? You could argue he’s not. But he’s not THAT much less than it that justifies having to move a 1st round pick to move his cap hit.

All that aside, Tavares is not waiving. He has no reason to and honestly it’s a bit disrespectful of the team to even consider it.

The parts of the core that are available or will be asked to waive their NMC are Marner and Rielly. That’s it.

It's a late 1st and Foligno was nowhere near the negative cap value. He has roughly a negative cap value of $5M and history says a late 1st isn't far off as the cost to dump $5M of cap; maybe a late 2nd.

but he's a 65 point player on a stacked team as indicated by this past season and another year older he's not getting any better

A down year on a stacked team and getting 1 year older? 65 points is not $2m to $3 too much against the cap, try like $5M too much. If you think he's going to improve with ago on a bad team, I've got oceanfront property to sell you in Arizona

played a great chunk of the year injured (thats an eye test, usually he will go into board battles and not give up until his team has a good chance at getting a puck out, he hasnt done it this year, nor has he been hitting as much) , i dont want to trade him anyways, nor do i think he would waive to go anywhere

"You can argue he's not worth $11M"???? Objective fact: He's not worth anywhere near $11M, he's worth $6M...maybe $8M on his best day

He's the new version of Toews but with a worse cap hit; he's got negative value on the open market, and to your point, he won't waive so none of this matters

If you want us to pay his $7M bonus, which this proposal seems to suggest because the pick would happen before bonuses are paid out, then yes, TOR will have to pay us to take his contract. The only way TOR gets anything for Tavares is, first, obviously he needs to be willing to waive, and second, TOR is willing to retain 50%, which would defeat the purpose of moving him in the first place.
