Younger upfront and Dman changes

Created by: DubasJr
Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 17, 2024
Published: May 17, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- Marner for McTavish and picks. Anaheim has not sniffed playoffs for years now. Could use a boost to that young core of players. Moving McTavish is not ideal for them but they have Carlsson, Gauthier, Zegras, Mintyu, zellwegger, as the young guys. Marner-Carlson-Gauthier first line will be one of the best for years if those guys live up to expectations.
- move Kampf for cap
- Stephenson 2C and bring back domi
- commit to Pesce long term, Rielly finally gets his D-partner
- sign Martinez to an expensive one year deal (allows for flexibility next year when JT, Knies, McTavish, McCabe Woll, and Thompson are up.
- acquire Markstrom for picks and prospects. Gave less than I’ve been seeing from others bc Calgary didn’t retain salary.
- move Robertson to get him a fresh start. Lizzotte effective bottom 6 player and he’s a good penalty killer
- Timmins and Jarnkrok gone for picks (whoever wants them). Defiantly suitors for Jarnkrok, maybe not for Timmins but you can always bury him in the minors or just carry him as a 7-8 D
- Motte/gologoski/Weber as scratches. All good place holders injuries.

McTavish is a non-starter

Saying anything else is beating a dead horse at this point

Ducks decline

Kings would prefer a young undersized bottom 6 center over a young undersized bottom 6 winger.

Kings decline.

didn’t realize Mr. Glass was untouchable. My bad. Thought Marner would be a good fit amongst the very young (Leo, minty, Gauthier) and the veteran group (gudas, Killorn, Fowler)

He doesn't match the team identity, he's not a good fit here, and what's this "Mr. Glass" dig for?

Ya I mean fair he hasn’t won anything in T.O but he’s still an all star player on both sides of the puck. Something I personally think ANA is missing.

I called him mr glass bc I had him in fantasy this year and even tho he played 60 something games it felt like he was always hurt. Solid 2 months of the season where he was in and out of the lineup.

Nothing to do with Marners fit at all

Everything to do with how McTavish is viewed in ANA.

He’s a core building block for us and trading him for anyone that would reasonably be available doesn’t make sense

That is far more than Toronto should give up for Markstrom with his age and contract (especially when they already have Woll).

Players miss time, made of glass is a designation that can be given to Kirby Dach or Patrik Laine, McTavish is by and large healthy all year, but there was no point pushing him to stay in the lineup for a lost season when he was banged up, it's better to let those injuries heal.

The allure of an all star level player is that they should be able to drive their own line, that's usually the center's job, but it's great when a wing can, and if they can, they can demand huge salaries. That's why Kane got the first 8 digit cap hit for a winger, he could drive his own line, and he could do it in the playoffs. Marner has shown he can't drive his own line, elite as he may be, he's just a support player, and you don't give support players Marner kind of money if you expect to have a team that works. Add to that McTavish is the kind of player Verbeek covets, Marner is not, and unless you can get a 31 team bidding war going with a full waiving of his NMC, you cant even ask for a player of McTavish's status coming the other way. You'll get a PLD return of a late first and some prospects that had high hopes but we're blocked from rising up in their current orgs.

Marner can drive his own line though. Maybe not in playoffs but in the regular season he defiantly can. He jumped around between Matthews and JT this year and he is often the guy with the puck on his stick when something amazing happens. Even dating back to the Babcock days when he played with Bozak and JVR, he was the guy making the plays, creating space and setting up his teammates. He made JVR close to a 40 goal scorer. He elevates players around him (in the regular season, which is where Anaheim needs success, as of right now.)

NMC is a good point but there will be suitors and probably a handful of them. It’s often very common where a player of Marner’s ability gets traded with an extension or with the intention of signing where he’s waiving to go, which will increase the value for the Leafs, as well. I think people may be blowing the NMC thing out of proportion because it’s the leafs, we’ve seen players moves for hauls before with them.

Maybe I was wrong to assume Anaheim would trade McTavish but a “McTavish” level player and some picks isn’t outrageous by any means. And honestly, I would be happy with a PLD return, vilardi, Iafallo (type players) + picks and prospects would be great for the leafs.

But I defiantly see where you’re coming from. McTavish is your young stud and you wanna see him grow along with all the other guys the ducks have drafted.

Woll is unpredictable bc of his health concern. I did think it was a little rich but goalie trades are not common so I wasn’t sure

You kind of just pointed out the problem, when he's bouncing between Tavares and Matthews he's great. Yeah, a highly skilled playmaker bouncing between a superstar center and a generational talent center is going to have a ton of success. It's when he was given a lesser line to lead that he fell flat when he needed to elevate his game. Zegras and Carlson are both high IQ playmakers as well, we need guys who can shoot. Nylander was a target for us, he fits what the team lacks and Verbeek covets, Mariners just not that guy for us.
