WOW!!!! that's a huge wager that (1) Thompson pans out, and (2) Thompson re-ups. Since the first is the 2024 choice, will you be able to even talk to him and his agent about an extension before making the trade?

Marner can't just walk. The Leafs cannot afford to not trade a player with that much trade value if they don't intend to resign him.

Vegas doesn't really need more D. And the D that you signed aren't really that much of an upgrade with the exception of Tanev. Dumba wasn't great this year and frankly hasn't been lately, while Chatfield was a very good 6th guy, but I don't know if he is ready for a top 4 role.

If Marner ever played for Torts, I'd need a Prime Series that just follows the 2 of them day to day & just have Paul Marner show up once a week for some cringe lol

Starting in October 2024, there will be approximately NHL players that will UFAs. What's so special about Marner? Gee, haven't even read one post from Bruins fan trading Brad Marchand because he's going to be a UFA too.

I would hope so. Goalies are so unpredictable, just gotta hope he pans out.

He's got an NMC & I can't see him waiving TBH. We know what his camp is like. Even if we would waive, his list would likely be Boston, and Florida lol, just to get back at the Leafs.

Of course the Leafs can keep Marner for a year, not resign him, and use that cap roster. Look at the Leaf roster this season, Bertuzzi, Domi, Tavares, Reaves, Jarnkrok, Samsonov, Brodie, Benoit, all UFAs which the Leafs signed without compensation to the other teams that "lost" them.
Why are Leaf fans so selfish?
He's a near impossible trade anyway. He likely only wants to play for a good team so he can keep his numbers up his contract year. Good team don't have the cap. And why would a poor team give up much for him....11m can be spend on just a good UFA or UFA(s).

Not a leafs fan. Just saying that it isn't a wise move to let one of your top 3 most valuable assets leave for nothing. Look at Calgary for example. They let Johnny Hockey walk after he put up 115 points and they never recovered. Pietrangelo leaving the Blues, Panarin and Bobrovsky leaving CBJ. If you aren't sure you'll be able to resign a high end player, a team needs to be able to recoup something for him. A player with trade value like Marner can help kickstart a retool by trading for younger players or established player that otherwise won't hit free agency. Kinda like what the Jets did with PLD. That was a player that wasn't going to resign, so they traded him for a very good top 6 forward in Vilardi, very good middle-6 guy in Iafallo, plus a couple other assets. Marner has plenty more value, even with his high cap hit (which a 3rd team helping retain is becoming very common) and a NMC.

1 year of rental Marner at almost 11 million likely does not have as much value as RFA PLD last summer, and that trade was panned as an overpay by LA.
