I love how people think Calgary has any leverage here.

They need to fill a slew of roster spots and at present do not have the cap space to do so.

Teams are not going to help ease that burden with "fair market value" when cap space is at a premium.

Remember, Toffoli - a SEVENTY point scorer - went to the Devils for Sharangovich and a 3rd. He'll be a good fit for Calgary, but the Devils still won that deal by a wide margin.

I love how people think Calgary is going to be giving players away.

Calgary currently has 18 players under contract (including the pending UFAs) and 2.4 million in cap space. That's enough cap space for 3 players on entry level contracts. They have multiple NHL ready prospects and plan to leave spots open for some of them. They're in no rush to move the rest of the pending UFAs they have until the trade deadline to do it. All of the pending UFAs are good players unless someone gets injured or his play falls off a cliff they will be desirable deadline targets. Calgary certainly wants to extend Lindholm they'll probably extend Zadorov and Kylington regardless of what happens with Lindholm and the rest. That leaves Hanifin (the only one who actually has requested a trade) Backlund (who seems to be leaning that way) and Tanev as the ones most likely to be moved.

Toffoli wanted a 6 or 7 year contract with a big raise. That wasn't happening not the dollars or the term. Sharangovich and a 3rd was a good return for an older pending UFA they weren't going to resign anyhow. Toffoli won't match last year's production in NJ where he won't be the coach's favorite and won't be on the 1st line + 1st PP. His production will regress back to career norms of 20-25 goals and 40-45 points if not worse. Sharangovich on the other hand will get an opportunity to play in the top 6 in Calgary and is a good bet to match or exceed the 24 goals and 46 points he had 2 years ago. Calgary gets bigger, younger, faster, saves some cap space and gets a 3rd to boot, that's a good deal.
