The oilers are in such a bad situation when it comes to goalies. I’d give up 1 top 9 guy just to fix the goalie situation.

I doubt they can afford Varlamov's cap hit if they aren't sending something else back though. And they'll have UFA options in the summer that won't cost Yamamoto and a pick.

If Varlamov is going to Edmonton, I think Koskinen comes back, and I don't think he would count as value towards the overall package, more just balancing ledger ($4.5M AAV vs. Varlamov's $5M AAV). Isles go with Sorokin as the clear-cut 1 instead of 1A, Koskinen gets a handful of starts to keep him fresh before going UFA at the end of the season.

Isn't this a summer deal? That's what it looks like... but in any case I was referring to next years cap - sending Koskinen back doesn't help Edmonton with next year's cap.

Missed that, my bad. Edmonton's looking at ~$7M in cap space next year with a handful of RFAs that will need raises, only 5 D signed, and Mike Smith penciled in as the starting goalie. If the Isles feel like they can find a decent RD3 to replace him, I wonder if Edmonton thinks about trying to acquire both Varlamov & Mayfield, while sending out Yamamoto, a pick or two, and Zack Kassian to offset some salary. Kassian would basically slide in to the Clutterbuck contract slot - not ideal for the Isles, but if they feel strongly about Yamamoto & picks it could be worth it?
